Unable to Write to CD/DVD - Read from DVD Works

Hi,
I've got a VS2480CD that I updated to a VS2480DVD quite q while ago. About 6 weeks ago, the hard drive died (unrecoverable) so I replaced it. I was able to restore a large portion of what had been done on the recorder.
I tried to write to CD last night, and after the first attempt was successful all subsequent attempts failed. Although I could read from the drive, I couldn't write to it. I replaced the DVD drive with another of the same model, but the symptoms remain: I can read from the drive but cannot write to it.
The VS is at OS 2.5 (.04 I think) and the DVD that was previously used, and was replaced with another is a UJ-845B. Both the original DVD drive and the replacement have a sticker that indicates UJ-845B, but both report to the recorder that they are UJ-845S units.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Best regards, Bob Charest

Bob, The only thing I can think of is the data on your backup disc's may be bad. When you say restore do you mean recover? You also said your HD went bad (unrecoverable), recently I had an HD go bad and I tried to backup everything before it did, some of it recovered ok but some of it didn't.
Try a backup that you are sure was good.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for replying, and sorry if I wasn't clear: My situation is that the VS2480 can read (and restore) from the DVD drive with no trouble... It just can't export tracks or do any operations that write to the DVD.
Thanks! Bob

Does it even start the write operation? Sometimes the units can be picky with brands of cd-r used. I've been using (only) Taiyo Yudens for 12+ years and the 2480 loves them - couldn't even tell you what other brands might work well.
It's either your media or the burner. Be aware if you want to export wav files, Roland never upgraded to OS for the dvd burner to kick out the wav files to dvd, have to still use a cd-r.
If it's the burner, I highly recommend using the Panasonic UJ-870 model.

Hi,
It does start the operation, then fails.
I'd been using that model DVD drive in this VS2480 for quite a while with no problems until a few days ago. Since I installed a new drive and the symptoms remain, I'm thinking the problem might be with the IDE controller itself.
Understood that I've got to use CD-R, which I did.
Thanks! Bob

The problem with the new drive could be the firmware setting. The CD-R firmware must be set to "master".
I've heard of some way for the user to set this, but don't remember the procedure, and it may not be possible. It may have involved soldering a jumper somewhere.

Hi DK,
Thanks - Yes, I understand this as well. I bought several of the same drive as possible replacements.
The thing is, the original DVD drive that I bought was working correctly up until Sunday night. I wrote one mastered track to CD, then couldn't write any more.
When I installed a replacement drive, the symptoms were exactly the same.
Thanks! Bob

Perhaps take the unit apart and reinstall the current hard drive and dvd burner, maybe something is loose.
Or try another hard drive. These seem (to me) to be the quickest and cheapest things you could try on your own.
You could also try the self diagnostic check, I forget how to get into that on booting up. Someone here please chime in on how to do this. That might let you know exactly what the problem is. (It's been posted before, you might be able to search for the thread.)

Hi Thanks for replying!
The hard drive is fine (I replaced it about 6 weeks ago when the original one died.) I then restored everything I had backed up (unfortunately, I hadn't backed up everything - ouch!)
Since then, I've done a few small projects, and after mastering was able to write to CD with no trouble... Until this past Sunday night.
I'm going to re-install the original CD drive that came with the unit when I bought it, as it hasn't been used since I upgraded to a DVD burner.
I did re-check all connections - the DVD drive attached very tightly to the connector socket, and is then held in place by that one Phillips screw - that's definitely not loose.
The hard drive is working with no problems, as well.
I would dearly love to get into a self diagnostic check mode - I'll do some more searching on that subject, but if anyone on the forum has a quick link to that procedure, I'd be most appreciative if you would post it.
Best regards, Bob

I found the thread that explained how to put the unit into diagnostic mode: http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=783639
The diagnostics indicate a problem with the IDE controller, which makes sense.
Thanks all for your help on this!

Yeah, but you didn't do any physical damage to the IDE controller (or did you )
So I'd at least try taking it apart and re-seating all of the cables and the burner.
The hard drive/burner caddy has 2 boards, the big horizontal one (easily seen) and then the smaller vertical one - that one goes in between the burner and the big board (connecting them together). It will only take you 30-45 minutes to disconnect and reconnect everything. I'd bet money (just a little though!) that it fixes your problem.
Or, again, swap out another hard drive and another dvd burner, becuase that will only run you $30-40 in parts versus sending the machine off or (good luck) trying to find the IDE controller. Heck, maybe start with the 5 minute phone call to Roland to see if they have the part in stock - you never know, sometimes they do. I doubt if many have had to buy the IDE controller over the years.
Let us know how you make out.

Hi all,
Sorry to resurrect a zombie thread but...
I tried getting in touch with Roland tech support to see if I could get a replacement IDE controller card for my VS-2480, but got no reply.
Is there anyone on this board that has (and would like to sell) a working IDE controller for the Roland VS2480?
Thanks you! Bob Charest
