Recently obtained a second 2480DVD to sync / backup with my original VS2480CD.
The newer DVD VS is fitting in well thus far but is noticeably hotter-to-the-touch when compared to my CD vs after 30 minutes of operation; especially on the back side near the PSU.
It seems that the fan located on the backside of the DVD 2480 is not running (or is SUPER quiet when compared to the faint noise and wind-blow I encounter with the CD's fan)
I recall reading something about users disconnecting the fan for quieter operation but isn't this referring to another smaller HD fan? this doesn't apply to me as the VS is in another room separate from the musicians.
Just venting (no pun) until I can no longer put off opening the DVD VS up to inspect the fan further for replacement....Any one else encounter this?
I fear the inevitable summer-time overheating as this thing could keep a small room warm and cozy during the winter months....but I can hope!

Doesn't the 2480 have a soft switch for the fan, like the earlier models do? Maybe start there, to see if it's turned off all the time?

No "soft switch" with the 2480. Like uptil said, I wonder if the fan was disabled for quieter operation?

Thanks for your reply Uptil, From what I've been able to read on here, is it not just the earlier vs-18XXs that had a fan switch? - and for whatever reason, it was omitted from the 2480 program...unless certain modifications are made (adding a switch) - as I understand it...I would LOVE to be shown otherwise though..
Pg 46 from the 2480 manual just mentions the VS uses a cooling fan / exhaust vent that should never be blocked to prevent overheating but unfortunately no mention of a switch...still searching the VS tabzzz

Thanks for chiming in, Pete....I was wondering the same thing..
However it looks as if I won't know until I crack'er open...damn..
Maybe I can get by using it for now as the "cooler" months roll in, but one has to wonder "how hot is too hot?"

Some add a switch so the fan can be turned off during live recording but the 2480 does not come with a fan switch.
Do you hear a fan? Do you feel air movement at the back of the VS, the fan is near the power switch. I would think you would be able to tell if there was a fan or not, if not then that's either a very quiet fan or no fan at all. Good luck

If I remember right like Frank said some have installed a switch to temporarily turn off the fan.
I also remember people installing a quieter fan.
If you have to pull her apart you might consider those options?

All good advice here.
Take the back off and see if the fan is connected; it's obvious what and where it is and is only a modular piece that connects to its discrete plug. Easy pull out and put new one in. Nothing taxing about it.
If it isn't working (and they do break down) Roland sell them, about $20. Best get a couple, as they will be not available at some point.
cheers, Graeme

No, it's all one bespoke piece form Roland. At least it's a sane price, I've stocked up on a few for the 2480 and the 2000.
Maybe there are generic ones, but since they are cheap enough from a multinational company, buy them from there so it's no lottery.
cheers, Graeme

I saved some specs on quieter fans that will work from others posting them here in the past...
San Cooler 80 by Sanyo Denki Model: 9A0812L403 Voltage: DC 12V Current Draw: 0.06A OR Silenx IXP5211 iXtrema Pro Fan 80mm x 15mm, 11dba, 18CFM TigerDirect.com had them for appx $11
I hope this helps Frank

Agreed....many thanks for that Frank. Very helpful. Anything that takes a dollar off a multinational company is surely a good thing.

:-) The incredible power of the VS2480 over other VS models needs more to cool it down.
But seriously, I posted the issue about the smaller (1 inch) fan making a whizzing noise that drove me mad. I've never recovered! (joke) I tested this rigorously and the caddy fan wasn't needed so I removed this fan and haven't looked back. After acquiring an Edirol DV7-DL recently well actually an Edirol PR80 but you get the Edirol DV7-DL for free (anyone remember them? Like the Video version of the VS2480...). I have found that the fan was really there for this unit exclusively and not for the VS2480 (they both use the same HDD caddy).
The large fan at the back of the VS2480 is for the cooling of the power supply and the VS2480HD Hard Drive, if it's not working I'd get a new one. My one drive account has the exact model listed will link this below if I can find it.
I suspect the airflow noise is when the air hits the laser cut vents at the back of the VS2480 rather than just the fan. Never been motivated enough to cut the vent area out of the rear of the VS2480 but would be a good experiment to cut out the same vent and mount the exact fan model in a simulated enclosure and hear the difference, if any.
Paul.
Fan with airflow spec etc.

I use to just throw a pillow on top of my VS when recording in the same room with it and that cut the noise enough for me.

I know that the fan does in fact cool the hard drive as well. One day it was warmer when using the 2480 and i put my fingers near the vent and i could feel the cool air flow in threw the vent. The hard drive does have pretty adequate cooling since its near the open vent, unlike a computer where the hard drive is way hotter with everything running memory, cpu, etc.
