Horrifying moment at wedding gig last night

I hate it when the evening starts by running late, and this place is way out in the sticks on a ranch. Directions are bad and it's not in GPS. We hit several slow downs you would never expect on Saturday evening traffic flows. Running like crazy to set up once we finally figure out where we're supposed to be (nobody is there to direct us, they are all at dinner and it's a 1000 acre property). 5 minutes to go, guitars are tuned, time to sound check and crank the volume ~ but no sound out of the tower of the Bose L1 1S. I brought the compact L1 to use for a kick drum effect pedal I built. Ended up having to use it and felt pretty severely under powered. I basically NEVER bring a backup PA.
I plugged it all in, unplugged, tried it direct without the Tone Match, no difference. It's not even a year old and probably been on 50 gigs or so with me. Always worked perfectly. We've had the compact for almost 4 years, never a problem and it saved my ass last night. Took the output from the Tone Match into the compact, works perfectly.
Now the question is how can I ever go to another gig with only one PA? The answer is, I can't.  The other question is WTF is wrong with my freaking Bose? I take extreme pains to be careful, keep everything inside in cases, etc.
Hate that shit. You pay top dollar for really good equipment, take care of it and when you plug it in, you expect it to work. If I hadn't had the backup, we would have not gotten paid and the bride would have had to have her first dance played through an iphone speaker.

That's some stress right there!
Is there a fuse in it?
I'm typically bringing stage monitors for the band with their own power amp. If something happens to the powered mains, it's go mono first ,but then go without a monitor second. I also bring a small backup mixer that I'll hopefully never use.

I feel that pain, been there had that happen to me. Stress is awful.
I used to carry a backup laptop for when mine crashed (when, not if)
Plugged the Vocals into a guitar amp once.
I carry a soldering iron, extra cords, electrical tape, long nose pliers, etc, for when i CAN fix something.
You will come up with s plan for the future.

Nah, no fuse. It's most likely a broken wire or bad connection where it slips down in the slots. It's cheapie plastic connectors in there. I hate to take it apart and void the warranty but I also hate to wait however long they're going to want to keep it and pay freight on it. Got it from Sweetwater with the 2 year plan.
Space is at such a premium in my vehicle. It only goes one way or it doesn't all fit. I hate taking extra stuff for the sake of extra. Now I'll be paranoid as hell if I don't.
I'll set it up again tomorrow and see if it works before calling it in...

We bring powered speakers and powered monitors, which work for a smaller set of mains too. I like the self-powered speakers for this reason. If one goes down, at least you have the other ones to use. They also have built-in mic preamps, just in case the mixer goes down. It might not be ideal, but you can get through a gig.

Good point T V L. I use QSC powered tops and passive monitors with a Peavey power amp...so there is redundancy. One mic can go into each Qsc speaker.

I used to use a Boss GX-700 rackmount unit for guitar processing. The very first iteration of the software had the propensity to lose ALL user programs if the power was cycled very quickly. Didn't know that.
I'd created about 70 user programs for my unit, and on one of the first gigs, one of my buddies accidentally kicked out my power supply then plugged it back in quickly.
Gone.
All 70 programs. This was before they came out with Librarian software, so I had no backup.
The tales are legend about my cursing that night.

You literally had to program a couple tones on the spot and limp through the gig? how horrifying.

Similar thing happened to me, Doug, with a voltage spike on a gig that erased the memory in ALL of my 4 keyboards, leaving me with just a few sounds to use for the entire gig, and it was an big, important event. Flatcat was there!
Needless to say, I never expected that, and after that incident, I carried backups for all the synth memory.

Agreed. Substitute "Oh Fuck" for Horrifying in the title and it works nicely. I called Bose and he acted like it happened all the time. They sent me a label, (which I paid $23 for) and UPS has it now. Estimated 3 weeks and they pay the freight back.
Marty, I feel your pain way more than Moose's. If you have a good guitar amp and a working pedal board, you should still be able to get a great tone. If your custom synth patch is gone and all you have is two sounds, that would probably be more than "Oh fuck". That would qualify for horrific. I had a Line 6 XT Live guitar pedal multi-unit for about 5 years. One night, I was playing acoustic and it went as loud as it could go, and as high gain as it could go (which is death metal screaming) in the middle of some old song like Brown Eyed Girl or something. It would not back down. That woke everybody up. I about shit myself. Now I used a a pedal board I built, the all in one stuff is fine 'til it breaks.
Since I now feel compelled to always have backup, I think this is another great excuse for me to ditch my car and get a truck.

I had something like that happen when I first went to soft synths a year or so ago. My Windows laptop freaked out and blasted static at 1,000,000,000 decibels through the FOH. They're still cleaning guts off the walls.

I got to a big private gig once (at the Royal York in Toronto), opened up the case for Byrdland and the strings were on the neck. The bridge had gone through the top. Luckily I had two other guitars with me.

We played a gig the hottest day of the summer - it was 117 degrees in my car and probably 108 degrees. We were in the SUN with no shade. The Mackie 808 died on us and we used an extra bass guitar amp for lead vocals to finish the gig (actually worked just fine).
Lost one of my tubes at a gig one night and had to play the first set with the amp sounding massively different and nearly wrong. Went home and picked up another amp for the rest of the night.
Played a gig years ago at a country club with horrible wiring - my strat was buzzing like a chain saw all night - had to gig through the noise.
Shit happens!

I wouldn't go on. We played a festival a year or so ago, and the stage was supposed to be shaded, but it wasn't. I refused to go on until they brought a big patio umbrella to shade my keys. My laptop would have shut down after about 10 minutes in direct sun. The client seemed to think I was being a dick... but so be it.
