Hey Planeteers, I have bought a 2480 last week for a good price. I have posted already about the preamps and got some great responses and and advice which made me understand how the preamps work.

I have a couple more things that I have noticed that need some addressing as to whether they are mormal or not.

The first is that I am getting a MIDI signal from the 2480s Midi Out when its connected to my Sequencer. I noticed it after moving it to another bigger desk. I keep getting a constant stream of messages in the form of Key Pressure(I think) signals on channel 16.

It reads for example: F5 Key Press 1 16
A5 Key Press 0 16
and so on.

Tell me, is this normal? I did not notice it until afer I moved everything to the new desk, the cable which I think was plugged in at the time might have got yanked in the move.

The second equiry is whether the humming coming from the machine is normal or not. I believe its from the hard drive as when I shut down the 2480 before I switch it off it stops, and I can only hear the fan going.

Before I moved it to the other desk I had it on a metal desk a and it was slanted forward a bit due to the desk not having enough depth(heance why I got a larger desk) I did not notice much sound coming from it then. Its now fully resting on a desk with a wooden top, and I don't know if that might have something to do with it(although due to the floor not being level the desk has a slight un-noticable lean backwards), I have to admit it did get a huge bash after the move on the top front where the arm rest is. I notice that if I slant it forward a bit it by holding the back, the hum seems to almost go if its held at the that angle, any more it returns, although slightly less than if I just leave it fully rested on the desk.

Tell me, again is the hum normal?

I only really started noticing the humming once I had finished trying to work out the Midi problem is, that is how preocuppied I was with it lol.

Any info and advice is most appreciated.

Cheers

Just an update. I think I have an explanation for the constant Midi signal being transmitted from the 2480s Midi out on channel 16.

It seems that it is Polyphonic Key Pressure messages, as the sequencer has shown, and its transmitting them for use with the MB24 Meter Bridge.

Now the question is, can it be switched off? I don't want it messing up any key pressure signals that I might use on that channel when recording, because the Midi out is connected to my Midi merger and then to my sequencer and so gets mixed with other signals and goes straight out on whatever channel I have the sequencer set to. Therefore I can't just filter it, as it will affect other key pressure signals going through that Midi port.

Just another update. I finally found out how to switch it off.

1. Utility.
2. System.
3. Cursor down to EXT Level Meter(MB-24)
4. Display Section box
5. Scroll all the way to the left to switch off

Phew, now thats done.

Can any one let me know anything about my second enquiry, the hard drive.

Thanks

Hello,

You'll like te 2480. Get familiar with the manual, and get a copy of Frank's Brownbag manual too.

Having the machine on a slant, as you call it, won't affect the drive, or anything else adversely.

If the noise is objectionable, you might consider replacing the hard drive. It is not difficult to do, but look on this forum for hard drive specs and requirements.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah,I'm upgrading from the 2000. Most of this information about the Midi issue is from the Manual.

I put in a request for the Brown Bag Manual.

I don't mind the noise so much, as I don't think it will affect any recording with mics. I just need confirmation if the hums a normal occurence, or maybe something more serious.

A lot of times the noise you hear may be the cooling fan for the HD?
If it is the HD like said above, fairly easy to change.

Thanks Pete, I don't mind the sound, I don't think its enough to affect any recordings with mics. I just need confirmation whether the humming and accompanying vibration(which might be causing the humming) is normal/expected or not? Or could it be more serious?

Would the sound of the HD cooling fan you mentioned cause a humming type sound? You can also feel a slight vibration with it.

Cheers
