I have been using Strontium 16Gb. Win7 only sees the first partition of it on my PC, works for me though. I think there is a partition shuffler software discussed somewhere here. Never bothered with that myself as the SD card is only a transitional solution to get those files onto a hard disk anyway.
Be aware, SCSI bus operations are slow, 5 Mb/sec or so.
On the other side ripping VS files to wave straight off the SD is reasonably quick.

I should re-state that we can use the SD as a recording drive.
16 live channels direct to SD, then take the SD to the PC via VSWaveExport app.

Great, I've ordered the parts and a friend is making the box on his printer for me.
One other question, about VSWaveExport: My understanding is that it rips the individual tracks within a project to .wav. Let's say I have a guitar solo in a 5 min song that starts recording at 2mins and ends at 2.15mins. When that track is ripped to .wav, is it only 15 secs, or will the .wav be the full 5 mins?
What I'm getting at is, if I rip the files then go to protools, will I have to realign segments manually?

All ripped tracks will begin at zero on the timeline and extend until they actually end in the recording, so your solo would star with 2 minutes of blank filler from zero and end at 2.15. The tracks that extend the song length to 5 minutes will end at 5 minutes. So no realignment necessary.

I can connect a 4TB HDD (Portable drive) into my PC's USB port and store to this via VirDIS. I don't need to have the PC on all the time. This SD media option here is way to small and haphazard for my purposes.

I can store over 15 x 256GB for under $200 bucks and it's stored in one place without a whole stack of SD's laying around. Not considering the PC internal HDD's themselves.

The SD cards using 256GB even at say $50 (normally $70-$80) x 15 = $750

Without the cost of the interface device itself. Even if I purchased 2 x 4TB HDD's as external USB storage @ $400 and then purchased VirDIS I would still be ahead $350 which covers the cost of the VirDIS product.

I still see VirDIS as the better long term investment and there's the big bonus of being able to store my recorded VS2480 files to Cloud storage.

I see this as insurance for a very small cost and even if the VS2480's I have stopped working all together, my files are still there in an easy to retrieve storage option that could be converted to .WAV files from the external storage or essentially anywhere in the world.

Also, being privy to loads of tests on VirDIS-1 I'm aware of the VS2480's picky nature and things can seem fine for a while and then it fails.

I'm aware of Bill's constant development of VirDIS and it's very stable.

Still like the SD idea in principle all the same.

The tiny MicroSD could be considered a bit fiddly. But it has been stated the latest SCSI2SD card takes full sized SD's as used in cameras. You only need one, and it cost as much as a big mac.
Also the largest partitions in the VS are only 11.5Gb. The VS internal drive is fixed at 120Gb. I do not understand why You need multi Terabyte capacity for that job.
The SD card is only used to carry the data over to an archival drive. I have only one 16Gb SD card that handles all my transfers to PC right now.
And only using the first 11.5Gb SD partition to do so.
I liked using VirDIS, it was the only choice for me at the time. Now it seems our choices have multiplied when it comes to VS file transfers and its a good thing. I recommend users consider the options and choose what suits their individual requirements.

I think I got my firmware through this link;
http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=SCSI2SD
You need to update that firmware first before connecting the SCSI2SD card to the VS. Attach the USB-PC to flash the firmware, only takes a few mins. Then You're good to go, hook-up to the VS while power is off (always connect SCSI devices while power is off or risk letting all the smoke out of the chips, yes folks silicon chips contain smoke according to some dubious sources).

It is quite impossible to capture all of the smoke and inject it back into the chips in the correct molecular order.

Now, don't let the fact that I'm an MIT engineer dissuade you from stepping into the future, or anything; but, holy shit, is there REALLY a practical need for this type of recording media replacement in the VS-2480?

Yeah, there is. Removing it from the VS and placing it in your PC's card reader for import. A massive time saving over VS internal back-ups / R-BBUS transfer / ADAT transfer / any other kind of transfer.

Version 6 is out, apparently, though not in stock :
http://shop.codesrc.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=62
It says it can run up to 10 MB/s, but would that help at all ? I read that the VS-2480's SCSI is limited to 5 MB/s.

What else is required ?
I suppose you also need a converter to DB25, plus a cable. What about the power supply ? Do you need to power it or is the SCSI cable conveying power ?

Thanks

Has anyone tried larger cards ?

The data flow is limited by the SCSI controller in the VS.
So it will always be real slow, time for a coffee break.
That is only a consideration for old projects stored in the VS HDD. New projects can be recorded direct to the SD. Then power down & pull the SD, pop it into a card reader and blammo. Fast as Your card reader allows.
As for larger SD cards, my Win7 box can only see the first partition. I would not recommend SD cards as a long term storage solution. Same goes for SSD drives at the moment.

As for the parts You need to order, those are back on page 1 of this thread.

If You dont have an old SCSI HDD Case laying around then You will need a cable and depending which cable You choose You may also need an adapter.

So I ordered the parts and made the little box, and I have it all together now and ready to update the firmware. The website links to several files in formats I don't have, and it gives zero guidance on how to perform the update. Any help making sense of the update procedure would be much appreciated!

Thank you! I was corn-fused by all of the file directories and different files, but I just downloaded the windows 64 bit file, ran it, and followed the instructions in the manual you linked to and it worked. I guess all the other files are for something else. Next step is to copy old projects to the SD card and try to convert them with VS Wave Export.

Hi all. Do any of you know if this SCSI to SD solution is exclusively for the VS-2480? I have a VS-890 and I'm curious if SCSI2SD design can be used by other VS models.

Thanks. Ironically, that compatibility list is what started my inquiry. It seems odd that this SCSI2SD device would only work with a VS-2480 when there appear to be a number of SCSI hard drives that work across the VS range. I was hoping someone already took a chance and tried this SCSI to SD solution on something like an 890 or an 1824...

Itead for Rest of the World:

https://www.itead.cc/scsi2sd.html

You'll need to get the adapter:

https://www.itead.cc/scsi2-50pin-to-scsi1-db25-adapter.html

And a DB25pin to DB25pin IEEE cable like this:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTAwMFgxMDAw/z...t_id=880000500F

Its good to have a way to back up your projects at the very least, by transfering to your computer from the SD, and then onto your external HD etc for archiving. Worth a try.

Hi All, and happy new year!

I'm just getting around to trying this out. I connected everything to my 2480 and then turned the unit on. It seems stuck on the "system initialize" screen, and won't even send a signal to the monitor. I turned it off and remove the SCSI connection on the VS, and everything worked fine. So I turned it off, reconnected, and of course it gets stuck on the "system initialize" screen. Am I doing something wrong?

Just guessing, but could you have a SCSI ID conflict?

Every SCSI device in the chain must have a unique ID, from 0 to 7. According to the 2480 Appendices, the 2480 factory SCSI setting is 7, so pick any other vacant ID(0-6) for the external device. I don't know the external device you are using, but SCSI IDs are often set by jumpers.

Hi there, it was a long time ago, but I remember setting the ID in some windows application that I got when setting up the device over USB. Had to flash the firmware before it would be seen by the VS.

Thanks for the responses! I did flash the firmware, but I didn't see anything about setting the ID, and there are no jumpers on the board (that I can see at least). I'm pretty lost at this point as to what I should do.

Hi,

Yeah I am stuck at that stage too.

I just plug it in after the 2480 has booted up. You can still format it, and use it once you plug it in again after boot up. Just have to remember to unplug before starting up the 2480. Changing the ID has not made a difference unfortunately.

You can set the SCSI ID in the SCSI2SD-Util app, by selecting one of the device tabs(Device 1 for example), and it will be near the top under the "Enable SCSI Target" checkbox(default is 0).

Hopefully I'll get it sorted and report back.

Hi, YES. I done it. I had some help from Michael McMaster who invented the SCSI2SD.

He suggested: "Setting the scsi2sd "Startup Delay" parameter (to simulate plugging it in later)"

So I experimented with different times, and set it 50 seconds, and BINGO, it worked.

You will find the setting at the top of the "General Settings" tab in the SCSI2SD-Util app.

Happy Recording Planeteers

Thanks for your help! It worked when I plugged it in after starting. But when I went to format it, it only created one drive with 2.1GB of space. I'm using a 16GB SD card, and I selected the 10GB partition option on the format menu. Any ideas?

I did try copying a file to it and it worked fine, and wasn't horribly slow. It actually seems faster than doing a back-up disk. I'm really excited about this storage option if I can get the drive to format to a larger size!

Hey there, glad you got it working.

To set the card capacity, in the SCSI2SD-Util app, first load the current settings from the card, you then have to change the SD cards "Device Size" to 16GB in the SCSI2SD-Util app. You will find it on the "Device" tab(Device 1 for instance) your card is setup with, its the seventh setting down from the top. Change it to 16, make sure GB is seletecd in the selection bow below it, and save the changes to the SCSI2SD.

Plug the SCSI2SD back in into the 2480 and format it again, and you should have all 16GB available over two partitions(11.5GB and 4.4GB) don't forget to make sure the card is formatted to 10 GB partitions, if you got time you might want to format with "Surface Scan" and "Physical Format" both switched On if you have been using the SD card elsewhere or formatting the whole card for the first time(takes about 5 hours).

This is all very encouraging, but there is a question:

How is this powered? I see a standard molex power connector, but is external power required, or is power provided via the SCSI connection to the VS?

Thanks! That worked perfectly. I also set the start up time to "50", and the VS2480 starts up fine and recognizes the drive. I did the regular formatting, and am copying over the first file to the 11GB partition as we speak! I wonder what the benefit is to the "surface scan" and "physical format"?

Thanks again to everyone for your advice!

I've wondered about the physical formatting of ssd's myself - I've been reading that it isn't necessary and can actually shorten the overall lifespan of the drive. I don't understand the details, but just thought it was worth mentioning.
