Problem linking tracks to use single reverb effect

I'm attempting to link 2 recorded guitar tracks (8 & 9) to a single effect. Here's the problem: When I go into Channel track 8, create a group number with track 9 and hit Ch link, it automatically links to track 7. The same thing happens when attempting this on track 9, except it links to track 10... What am I doing wrong here?
I've really been diving into the 2480 over last few weeks, but this is my first attempt at linking tracks to a single insert effect.

channels are automatically linked with odd number = left and even number = right. The simple solution in most cases would be to move the two tracks onto an odd/even pair that is native to the machine.
If you really want to or need to fight the system, then I'm afraid someone else will have to tell you if there are any tricks to doing what you're asking for in the 2480. My VS of reference is the 1680 and it doesn't have all the little tricky bits the 2480 does.
Good luck with it, though.

Thanks Uptildawn. I actually figured it out after posting... I guess the bigger question now is: If I want to apply the same reverb effect to 7 drum tracks (linked) and don't have available tracks to move around, how do I link them up?
I did move the two tracks in question in order to link them, just hoping to have a workaround when considering multiple tracks. Thanks in advance.

Well, I'd say in the case of a reverb, or other effect that would not normally be used as an insert/series effect, you'd set up the reverb as an Aux and send each individual channel/track to the reverb that way. This allows you to apply the same reverb effect parameters to any number of channels, even a single channel, or all of them, using the effect return as a global volume and at the same time while maintaining individual channel control over how much dry signal is sent to be processed through each tracks send control.
I don't see a special need to link any tracks for that purpose, except for the convenience of maintaining equal settings for a stereo pair, such as overheads. Can the 2480 be set up to use sub groups?.... Maybe that's something that could be helpful.
In your example, it's doubtful that the kick drum mic would require any reverb, so if there's just one kick mic, it could go in the odd channel, couldn't it?
Even inserted effects can be set up on individual channels to use either left or right side of a stereo effect - such as a stereo compressor. A channel pair, such as overheads, would not always need to be prearranged into an even/odd group - although it would make life easier.

If FX1 is your Reverb, go into (any and) each track channel you want the reverb applied to by turning on its FX1.

Thanks for the replies. Using keeppracticing's suggestion: I'm attempting to do exactly what you mentioned above, but when I move to a different track channel (track 2) in order to use the FX1 reverb I used on track 1, FX1 is greyed out and assigned to track 1.

Sounds to me like the effect is being INSERTED and not used as a loop/parallel effect. Look to see if you have that effect inserted on any channel and remove it, if so.

Uptildawn, and keeppracticing, Thanks for the info. I think I'm beginning to understand what I'm doing with the INSERT and LOOP effects thanks to your advice. I was performing INSERTS, and think I understand the difference. Been messing around with the loops and was going about it all wrong.
Anyway, it's starting to make sense a little. Having said that, I'm sure I'll have plenty of goofy questions in the near future. This is one powerful machine, and I'm getting very good sounds from it contrary to reviews I read before purchasing it. I'm getting a very nice warm signal from the pre's, etc. Very pleased except for the learning curve.
