Remember those days ...and the song > nice job for sure ....not a rocker any longer -- but this had me listening more than once ... better than the original >>
I heard this live in Detroit = about 1970 ---
Wonderful separation/instrumentation ~!!

If I remember right, I kind of painted Gonzo into a corner by giving him a stereo drum mix instead of individual tracks. I was just getting started with EZ Drummer and didn't know how to split the drum channels properly. I spent all my time trying to get the drum parts right. I'd been playing the organ parts since I was a teenager, so that wasn't a problem.

cj, i listened to the original mix quite a bit.. and didn't try to absolutely reproduce it (couldn't if i tried, the source tracks are so different than the original) but i had fun trying to 'approximate' the layout of the original mix. Martin Birch was exceptionally gifted.
now, the original album recording wasn't released until march of 1972.....

working with a stereo drum file, i just carved out a few freqs that favored the snare and kick, and tamed the cymbals
it was a great way to LEARN my first DAW, sonar. this was my first project using sonar.
the learning curve was no steeper than anything else.

Rocks hard. Great production. No weak spots. Great guitar, as usual.

Sounds great! Only thing I'd do is bring the drums up overall. Make them hit hard. Either way, it rocks, you and Xeno did a great job om this.

that's right, we talked about trying to peel out the midi data, just to cross-talk to each other, i don't think i had EZdrummer yet at that point, so trying to work with sonar's drum program was really not an option...
you DID get the drum parts right! LOL
and working with a single stereo audio track, that was already well mixed, wasn't a big deal.

you DID get the drum parts right! I was surprised at how jazzy the fills were. Kind of unexpected in such a straight-ahead rock tune. I started out by playing the straight rhythms on the keyboard. Then I went back and basically transcribed the fills from the original onto the midi piano roll view. Lots of tweaking of velocities to make it sound natural. I spent at least a week on that. The original varies in tempo quite a bit... Ours does not.

yea, drums could come up , i agree...
i think if i decided to mix it NOT like the original, that'd be the first thing i'd change....

appreciate that jimmy....
i could almost play it from memory from my youth, but i had to learn the bass part and the vocal parts from scratch it's weird how you can listen to something for years, and know every note in your head, but have zero muscle memory to play or sing any of it
