Hi people, sorry if this is a tedious newbie FAQ, I apologise in advance.
What options exist to connect the VS-880 to a modern computer for the purposes of backing up and restoring the songs on the VS-880. As someone who was around at the time it was new but never owned one, I'm aware of SCSI drives and CD-R etc. But surely there must be an elegant way for fooling the VS-880 of thinking it's talking to a DAT or a CD-R drive when in fact it's sending its data to a computer?
Am I asking too much?
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.
warmest regards
Phil South

This thread from July last year discusses VirDis, which is - in your words - the only "elegant way ..." http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbth...rue#Post1478547
Lots of thread and post returns show up that you can skim through for more details about it with a simple search for VirDis as a keyword (keep it all one word, not vir and dis).
You will see in reading the linked thread that VirDis is not "current" in its public release form and is locked to the use of PCI and PCIe scsi cards at this time.
Still, it is the ONLY elegant way to back up and restore VS sessions. You can currently find an ebay seller for VirDis and you can reach the developer through that contact link to ask specific questions about its use.
Hope this helps get you started.

That's good information, thanks for that, appreciate the time.
So that's a kind of direct connection. Are there other ways to offload the songs in some way that you can get them back, like taking the drive out and attaching it to an IDE to USB cable? Or is that too hazardous?
I suppose getting a decent new SCSI external drive or DAT might be the cheapest way, if indeed they still make DAT tapes or SCSI drives. I suppose I'm just used to be able to back stuff up easily via cables and USB and such and this device dates back to a time when such notions were far in the future.
Thanks again
Phil

Do keyword searches for discussions about VSWE (VS Wave Export) and internal drive mod and SD card adapter, etc. There are hundreds of posts and at least tens of threads about such modifications and their successes/failures, as well as the various issues concerning availability of compatible components. What started as a promising and even cheap alternative/modification has become ever more convoluted and iffy as time and changes move on.

Interesting, thank you.
I have been hatching a plot to use one of these SCSI2SD cards in an the guts from an old SCSI drive enclosure, but hey it's all about what works and I don't want to reinvent the wheel if there are people who've tried to do stuff like this and have war stories I can learn from thanks for your info!

Didn't realize you had any knowledge of the SD card alternatives..... since you never mentioned it...... do a search for the SCSI2SD as well. There are at least a few discussions about them, including some experiences. Good luck with the mod, if that's where you go.

Posted this in the 2480 forum as well.
I just got the SCSI2SD and it's working right out of the box in the 880 Vxpanded.
This machine has the CF/SD card upgrade as well, Both storage devices survive a machine restart without reinitializing.

Kingston 4gb and 32gb micro SD in an adapter. IIRC, 4gb is the largest volume the 880 can address. The 32 gb card's 'extra' 28 gb are ignored.
I've heard no untoward noises. It's a bit odd to have this recorder be dead quiet-- it's almost as though the HDD failed!

Oh thanks apparently your advice cost me $35 bucks for the Kingston 4 gb cf card that doesn't work at all. Sorry to butt in - and I won't say more about it - but how fair is that accusation? After all, cf cards of the same size come in different read and write speeds - something not always obvious at a glance, since they oftentimes don't print it on the card. And dk didn't specify a particular Kingston card and didn't provide a link.
Maybe the card that you bought is a different "grade" - say 266x and maybe dk's is 133x speed. Things like that, even though not obvious at a glance, can make a big difference and especially where the VS mods are concerned. That's part of the trouble we've all had in coming up with consistent product to recommend to each other.
Here's a blog article I found that describes some of these variants, if you're interested in reading up on it: https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-cf-cards/
I realize that doesn't solve your particular issue. There are also cheaper sources for a 4GB Kingston cf card, depending on where you buy and where you live. I sincerely hope you can find what works for you and not need to spend a lot more to get things running - definitely frustrating!
