Just thought I'd start a thread if anyone wants to discuss thoughts.
I spent the morning going through iTunes dragging things onto a playlist. Holy shit...I think I maybe need to do one every DAY for the whole month or osmething...but, I did run into some consistent things that probably will disqualify....
Songs like That's Me recorded by Martina McBride--I REMEMBER listening to that album on the listening station...and not being a country fan...but, when it hit that song deciding "I MUST own this"!! And, she's been delivering music I love her whole career. She was my gateway drug into the 90s Nashville scene....which in turn (along with some other roads) led me back to 70s SoCal pop/rock....and some of the ladies who wrote some songs that ARE likely to be considered.
It turns out, this DID chart....barely....later on.....
Martina McBride - That's Me Side note....man, we were young once.
Anyway...I also noticed that there were some REALLY influential ALBUMS for me in the middle 90s (particularly) that I have a hard time picking a representative single song for....which is actually kinda enlightening for me....how there are albums I just hear as "albums". Partially BECAUSE they weren't hits, there were probably singles, but I never heard them! I mean alone, as singles....it was easier to ID when I didn't particularly love an album but it yielded a song like this, which I play regularly and have for 20 years:
Terrell - Beautiful Side Of Madness
That really spoke to me....as did Charlie's (Terrel) first record with the band, which was one on that list I mentioned--albums that had a huge influence on me that I have trouble saying "this song". This was a later solo follow up, that I wasn't likely "ready for"--being much more blues/soul roots, which came later mostly for me....the band had THAT only with lots of loud funky rock guitar which was my connection at the time. From memory, the guitarist died....
Then there were also some other "issues"....I think the Baby Animals were huge in their home of Australia....Jann Arden in her Canadian home....but, being "pre internet"--I experienced them as utterly commercial failures in the US. I think Suzy (singer of Baby Animals) marrying the guitarist from Extreme was probably how she's known here....ha...."wife of Nuno". So, given the masses of options I have, I'll scratch those....even though stateside they were non starters, but so was Robbie Williams--who signed like one of the biggest record deals EVER in the early 2ks....
Anyway....wow....lot's stuff....anyone else thinking about it yet? For me, this is gonna be the hard part.

Is there a plan here? Songs that weren't "hits" but had an effect on you?

I think if you replace "effect" with "influence" or "big influence" you would have the original #2 suggestion that Pop made and I would be all for.
I'd even go as far as to say as long as it didn't make the Top 40, it should qualify, but the one I have in mind wouldn't have even been in the top 100

The one I have may never have been heard by many people here. And it contains no banjo!

Yes....something that wasn't a hit....and something beyond "that you liked"--that had some significant influence on you as a musician.

Mine is one that had a deep impact on my playing. Something that showed a 15 kid (me) who had been playing guitar for about 2 years what could be done on an acoustic guitar.

what is the criteria of a song being considered a hit ?? I.E. I've got 1 song that charted at its highest point around 47 in the late 70's.. another that was my first real influence but charted high as 11 on one chart but was 10 years before I was born ?
Or no chart appearance anywhere, ever? As I don't think I know a song that influenced me that had never appeared anywhere at anytime on a billboard chart .. im thinking I could Fart into an Old Western Electric Carbon, release it (the song that is ) and find it on a chart... somewhere...lol?

Since a 4 sisters and their husbands are visiting out West for a few days -- might get them to grab a fiddle /mandolin / sing a few -- might be from Appalachia 1936-53 ... seems they like mainly that "old-timey" stuff...

well crap.. there went my 2 ....lol.. J/K .. though I already have Layla recorded.. would have made for an easy submission ..=O)~
Nope.. Mine is a country song from 1961 .. found it on one of my dads ole records when I was 4 /5 years old.. was the song that caused me to pick up a guitar for the first time .. I remember that day like it was yesterday. oddly enough.. Being I can't remember what I ate this morning ..
Been pondering learning it and recording it regardless AS I know my Dad would enjoy it, I think ?.?.?.? May do it.. have it waiting in the wings.. and if it doesn't pass.. I will take my lumps....lol...

Kyle - that's actually pretty cool.
I can't remember what I ate this morning
That's OK. I can't remember if I ate this morning. . . . . . And damn - I really wanted to do Sweet Child of Mine. I was gonna channel Paul Robeson and Earl Scruggs.

That would be a fun Project Idea.. Everyone pick a top 40 tune and record it with a Blue Grass flavor...?? Something different
Now that Im lookinig at it I guess not.... guessing not everyone has banjo's and mandolins lying around....?.. still cool though....=O)

That / they would be fun to mess around with in the studio.. hopefully after I start getting out there a little more I will start meeting some musicians to mess around in the studio with .. Once My Keyboardist and bass player get a little better versed on the songs were working on .. Im going to have them in to record.. but would like to have a good stable of musicians to pull from , mess around with etc.. have the ability to mess around with a lot of different stuff.. Like said on another post.. My musical taste.. influence is all over the map.. from Pantera, white zombie to John Denver to Ann Murray, Johnny horton ( battle of New Orleans was another big influence song..but it hit #1 in 1959 ;o(.. I still sing that song to this day .. another "dad" influenced song..lol...

What if you were to trim back the requirements just a tad,
Consider this;
One can surely think of more tunes that DID influence them, that probably DID chart...but DID NOT get much airplay.
But no one hit wonders...they would've gotten too much airplay, right?
More like, if it HAD charted, it was an obscure hit.
While they may have eventually charted, they may have only done so for a week or two, then fell away...possibly never to be heard again.
Just stick to the consideration that 'you doubt that many people remember, or barely'...(but YOU certainly do/did), thus, it was influential (to you)
An ("Oh yeah! I remember that!")...cover...

Yeah--just play something that influenced you.
If you remember, I didn't think we needed a definition of a "hit"--let it be like porn.
According to iTunes, I flagged 8 hours solid of material for consideration. Yikes.

You're now the boss of this incarnation of the planet song project 3.0.
So, it's pick something influential that was part of our fabric ?
I could probably make end of May, but whatever everybody wants...

End of May AND criteria that's more personal has me drawn in a bit..... We'll see if I can overcome my incapacitation by laziness.
Criteria by pop charts and specific groups leaves some of us fringe players a bit cold..... This is better.

So, let me get this straight....now we would like the binding/pushing/furthering aspect of the group exercise to be that we're going to post "some recording of whatever we want" 7 weeks from now? Can we allow people to post recordings they've made in the past? wait, did you mean May of 2017? Some people might be more comfortable with May of 2018.

I'm confused! I got lost somewhere about half way through this thread, it all started going down hill when I read the word banjo! Pete Doesn't everything go downhill after the banjo comes in? End of the month-post Sunday April 30th. Song that inspired you in some way (with accompanying story, hopefully)....that didn't chart into the top 40. Since I'm allegedly the "boss" (sic)of this month's experiment in cat herding, I delegate JA&HD as committee to head up and reach consensus on May's exercise for fun and artistic growth at VSP. Do start a thread now, since apparently you need two months lead time.
See, I knew you'd come up with a way to make #2 work. And end of April is great. I was going to pass if we had to wait until the end of May.

It's not that I need that much 'lead' time. I'm trying to make the transition from the 2480 to cakewalk and between the learning curve and common computer issues, things have been held back. I wanted nothing more than to participate in this last month's Beatles fete, but I'll just submit it when I can. Besides not knowing much of the (pro, semi-pro) recording/mixing process, I'll be at your mercy with whatever/whenever I come up with. I fully expect to learn more from your pointers in that respect than anything I've been learning online. As for what it is I have to offer (if ever) is simply my bare-assed (meager at best) raw talent. But once I've learned the ropes...watch out! And when I do, I'm gonna make up for these past months I missed out.
Lol! See that? I can't even post a quote properly..

I was thinking about what song influenced me and wasn't a hit, all's I'm hearing is crickets in my head.
Probably take me take two weeks just to decide on a tune?
Take me a month to learn it, program some drums, learn bass, guitar and vocals?
I could post something I recorded before but that seems to defeat the purpose of these exercises?
I don't know? Think I'll just pass on this one. Maybe I'll try to pull something off?
