Hell everyone and PLEASE be aware that I'm extremely new at what I'm attempting to do.
Even though I have read several threads on this very topic I still need a little help if one of you have a moment.

The way I understand it is that using to Coaxial S/PDIF Input would allow only 2 external signal sources to enter the VS2480 at a time. This might be all that I need at the moment, but in the future I might like at least 8 input sources at a time ?

QUESTION: If for example I use an 8 channel external preamp (such as one made by Presonnus or Focusrite) that have their own built in A/D converters and an ADAT Optical Output jack, could I this ADAT Optical Out to the VS2480's Optical Input so that I can receive all 8 channels of ? I'm assuming the VS2480 would allow me to receive 8 channels of ADAT all at once ?

NOTE: I have a Roland DIF-AT and the R-BUS Cable and could possibly figure out how to connect all of this, but I was hoping for an easier way to accomplish this, especially since the A/D converters might be a bit better in a newer piece of gear, like what I mentioned earlier, in either the Presonnus or the Focusrite 8 channel pre with A/D Converters built in.

Thanks for helping me, it's folks like you that help inspire folks like me.

Much Peace, Charles

HELL back at 'cha Charles. \:\)
(missed an 'O' in that greeting, did you? - ha!)

I don't use the 2480, but I'm pretty certain that the optical I/O are strictly 2-ch spdif (like the coaxial), so the ADAT from your preamps will not work as you'd hoped. Although I know there are some ADAT ports that double as 2-ch spdif on some gear, but of course, that wouldn't help you either.

It may be possible to use both the optical and coaxial inputs at the same time to give you 4 channels of digital input at once (if memory serves), but that wouldn't help you either, if your preamps don't have coaxial outputs.

I wish I knew more about the r-bus routing (I don't have that on any of my VS units), so I can't say much about them...... I'm guessing that any digital path you take to get all 8 channels simultaneously from your preamps would require some sort of intermediate format conversion and that your r-bus may be the thing you would have to use on the VS side.

I remember being hopeful of this whole optical connection possibility back when I first got a Presonus 8-ch preamp unit a long while back.... what a drag that the same connectors and cables are used for both 2-ch spdif and 8-ch adat....

Greetings Lucy09.
Uptil is right. it's TosLink only onboard.
The DIF-AT will get Your ADAT in there.

You can't use the optical and coax spdif inputs at the same time, only 2 channels coming in one or the other. (You can have them physically hooked up, but the VS makes you choose 1 input or the other.)

The DIF-AT> R-BUS is the way to go. It will keep all 8 channels isolated coming into 8 channels of the VS. Remember to select R-BUS as your main digital input and set your input channels routing in the EZ-ROUTING room.

I just wanted to take a minute to say Thank You all for helping me with my recent query regarding "using an external pre-amp".

Bless all of you, Charles

Hey guys, if I don't have any external device that uses the ADAT Protocol, then really I see no reason to have the DIF-AT ?

The 2480 as you know does not support ADAT ? Am I correct on this ?

Actually since I'm just primarily a single guy working in my home studio and rarely ever record more than 3 tracks at a time, I'll most likely just stick to the way I've been working and that is using the Optical & Co-Axial INs & OUTs.

I have gained an interest in having something like the Roland AE-7000 apart of my set up, this seems the most logical in regards to having multiple INs &OUTs available for "maybe" a future need ? You see this is the biggest part of my quandary..."will I use it" ?

Peace & Kindness, Charles

Yes the adat is not supported unless you have the adapter box that was compatible with the vs-2480 for it, and that's almost impossible to find now.
