Anyone else get this? Using Coaxial SP/DIF in from Novation Ultranova or Boss GT-10 can run for a while but often freeze the VS at random intervals forcing a hard shutdown (pull plug).

Worked around by using an external DAC (Bare Beast) to convert the coaxial to analog signal, then decided to try the ART DPSII valve to soften the digital synth, and go in Optical. Which turned out real nice.

Crashes being extremely rare on VS2480's I got exited, LOL.

seems like a loss of digital lock.... is there any sign of something wrong other than a freeze? Are you running more than one digital device at the same time and are they properly sync'd?

Only one device at a time. I thaught it would be a clocking issue. Those two devices have no external clocking capability. The freeze is global, cannot respond to any commands, hard shutdown is the only option. But hey, the workaround sounded great. Better than going straight digi anyhow, no noise issues, so I'm happy.
Something for planeteers to be aware of. Later found an old Fostex DP-8 which converts coax to optical and all is well now. I would still employ the tube pre for things like pads & saws though, it was lush!!!

I've used my Boss GT6 and GT6-B with no problems. I bought an expensive Apogee coax cable for this. I have heard of people using cheap cables (rca) and having problems.

I also don't hear much difference going in digital.

Thanks Waterman, I never suspected the cable because it is a fat looking well shielded sort of cable. But now You mention it, that is a definite possibility. I tried one other hearty looking lead but the same freeze occurred. Got to shop for one that meets the specifications for SP/DIF transmission. Rather than using what "looks" like the right kind, ha.
