Once I went SSD I would never go back to HDD.

@dkfackler, I am not worried at all. When I was going down this road with other gear, I recall researching SSD longevity vs HDD. You probably read the same content. However that was older SSD. This newer SSD and the older SSD do not have high failure rates. Though the newer SSD is even more stable.
Plus you are not storing to it on a VS recorder all the time the way you would be if you were say working on a computer 40hours a week doing video editing, web surfing and such. So put into perspective, the SSD is likely to last longer than you will using your VS recorder.
I have yet to have an HDD fail when I used HDD in the past. Though I know it has happened to people in here and in other music forums I belong to. My Akai and VS gear have all been swapped out for SSD.
SSD has made my two VS units (VS2000 and VS2480) quieter, lighter (one of them I take to venues) and I have maxed out the storage capacity. Most importantly I am not worried about fragmentation (or long defrags) and failure.

The Seagate hd's that Winyardpro linked to will not work as internal hd replacements in the 1680. The 1680 requires a 2.5 inch drive (like laptops use) and these are 3.5 inch (like you'd use in a desktop pc.
You could probably use them as external drives, given a scsi case and the correct adapters and connectors.

Just tried to get the ones Paul listed, they're "out of stock', which you won't see online, I was however able to get a 120GB refurb with the same specs.
The guy I talked to said you need to call to make sure they are in stock. Seems like a good company. He also said Seagate hasn't made these drives in 15 years, they get them by buying out other peoples stock and companies selling off inventory.
He said they had 5 of the 120GB's in stock.

Got the same result Pete, saw WinyardPro's post too late. I take it there would be no concerns with regard to 120 GB vs 80 on an older VSHD, yes?
FWIW, also found this but haven't had a chance to contact them yet. Site says they have new and refurb in stock. Not sure all specs exactly the same either (?)

No concerns about 80GB vs 120GB, might take a little longer to format the 120.
I looked at Newegg a few months back but never pulled the trigger, (I get distracted easily). I'm pretty sure I bought my last drives from there? Seems like a good company.
I had one 80GB go down about 6 months ago, so I have my other 80 in the 2480 now, I also have my original 30GB for emergencies.
I have a 2480 HD model and a spare HD caddy that I can use to swap out HD's quickly.
Hope the one I'm getting works out.

Roland VS2480HD no probs. The key to a VS2480 Hard Drive is as the specs indicate "AVERAGE ACCESS (ms seek/read/write) ______/8.5/9.5". Less than 10ms and ATA100 and it should work.

Okay, got the drive yesterday installed it in the caddy put it in the 2480 and fired it up "NO DRIVE FOUND" WTF!
Pulled it out repeated the process same thing "NO DRIVE FOUND" again WTF 
So I'm starting to get pissed and then it dawns on me you dumb shit you forgot to put the jumper on the master pins!
Let this be a lesson to any of you installing a new hard drive.
So anyway everything went well and after about 10 to 11 hours of formatting I'm in business. Well, at least I now have a spare drive ready to go!

Good see you're up and running.
Just a note to respond to the 80 or 120GB stuff.
Even a 40GB drive will work! Realistically any drive comforming to the the right specs could be used. This could in fact be a 250GB.
For the VS1680 I would seriously consider just using VirDIS and save your money in the long term. The VS1680 could utilize a ZIP drive so VisDIS would perform very nicely with the added benefits of wave transfer.
