Hi All,
For three years now I have been using an Olympus LS20M as the final recorder in my signal chain with great results.

VS2480 or VS2000 output to LS20M

Many people are still using the cd drive or are converting files through a connected computer. If you are happy with that method... read no further.

I humbly suggest to all new users of these old Roland digital recorders that you buy one of the many great handheld stereo digital recorders and call it a day.
olympus

I first read about the article LS20M in Sound on Sound magazine and got it for concert recording. Then I tried it in other ways. It is brilliant because of the many recording options.

You do not need the LS20M because this one is also for video not just audio. There are some models that just do audio.

With cable pic this cable and the digital recorder you are set. (Y-Cable (stereo mini (1/8") male to 2 mono 1/4" males) splits a stereo mini (1/8") signal into left and right.

Cheers,
Ian

Hey there, Ian.

Can you give us a little more detail on how you're using the LS20M. Doubt that I'm the only one curious.

Always interested in how others are using their toys.

Thank you.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond.

Here are the specifics. The LS20M has:
Mic sensitivity chooses High or Low
PCM - 16bit 44.1, 16bit 48, 24bit 88.2, 24bit 96
MP3 - 256kbps, 320kbps
You can Manually adjust the recording level or use automatic
Once you plug 1/8" stereo into the mic jack the built in Microphones are disabled.

It uses an SD card (max 32gig)

I plug 1/4" cables into the Monitor Output of the VS and the 1/8 end into the LS20M.

Most often I record the band or rapper or whatever into the VS. Putting specific instruments and vocals on there separate tracks.
Then I use the Olympus LS20M for all my mixes.

99% of the time I live mix without automation. I use automation when I have to. For example if a particularly labor intensive set of finger movements have to happen at the same time. Rare.

This way I create many mixes efficiently. More importantly it forces me to create a different mix every time since I am going to the VS as a blank canvass each time.

I am a fan of the live mix. In my studio I teach people how to mix their own song and give them that option for less cost. If I am putting my name on the mix then the cost is much higher and they get four or five mixes of the same track.

This separates the wheat from the chaff. A lot of rap guys like the freedom of doing it themselves with supervision and no heavy decision making regarding "in the weeds" technical stuff. Quick and dirty as they say, high turn over.

Once the stereo track mix is done I just eject from the LS20M place it in the computer and drag and drop files.

People are thus getting a mix that should (technically speaking) sound better than a CD.

Cheers,
Ian

Thanks much, Ian.

Have you used your method to mix in genres other than rap?

Do you notice any degradation of the sound through the 1/4" cables?

Does the LS have a digital out (for use when going back to the PC)?

Thanks for sharing. Interesting stuff.

Hi L,
Looking back at the early post I see the many spelling errors. Geez I must have been tired. Please forgive. ANyway...

Yes I do many genres, many reggae, soul rnb, and pop music.
I have not noticed any degradation in sound.
The LS does not have a digital out. THis would be an awesome feature were it available. I am sure the LS would be much more expensive in such a case.

Cheers,
Ian
