Do you remove the SD Card in between the boots of the vs and enter it into a PC?

Try a different brand SD card. For SD being a standard, there are some minor differences between brands.
I have been successful with Kingston.
You may need to try a different adapter, for the same reason.

I think it's far more likely to be the adapter than the card. At least that's where all our previous conversations about this have ended up... and there are many of these conversations spread across the 880, 1680 and 2480 forums.

These adapters change components as often as the manufacturers run out or find cheaper alternatives. There's no way that I can recommend any SD adapter card today with any level of confidence. There's even bee a couple of times where people bought an adapter using the same link as that suggested as working and it turned out that they got an adapter that was similar but had changed slightly. We've never pinpointed exactly which component or components get changed that affect how a VS user can use it in a mod. The adapters evidently work fine in the normal computer world....... just not necessarily in VS land.
You might try getting a CF card adapter - they were more reliable back when we were discussing them. That might have changed too by now, but it's probably worth a shot, since they're not terribly expensive.
For a few dollars more, you can get an adapter that will hold an SD card in a CF-sized card that will go right in the CF adapter slot and that way you shouldn't need to spend more and change media in order to use CF cards instead of your SD card.
This LOOKS very similar to the CF adapter I have - https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Compact-Fla...+2.5%22+adapter
and this is what the SD adapter looks like - https://www.amazon.com/Eye-Fi-Compact-Ad...cf+card+adapter
it seems more expensive than what I remember, but it is very similar in looks to the adapter I was using.
Maybe these will work.......... maybe they won't I can't help you with confirmation or guarantee in any fashion that they will, or even should anymore.

My adapter is a SYBA SD-ADA45006
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186098
It has connections for two CF cards; I use only the Master and a CF-->SD adapter.
Works just fine, and formatting survives the restart.

Very glad to hear it's finally working! Would you mind sharing what you did to get it to work right? It could be really helpful to the community in the future.

As it's working with CF, it will most likely work with SD as well. I'm told that CF and SD are identical data structures residing in different form factor enclosures.

Thanks for this thread... I'm having this exact problem using an SD adapter.. looks a lot like the one mentioned here.
So, I'd like to try the CF adapter.. Could some one walk me through this.. like I'm a child.
Are these both possible options? SYBA SD-ADA45006 QNINE CF Card to 2.5" IDE Adapter
(Also, just something I noticed, FWIW; when I put an SD disk in the SD adapter and initialise (which is every time), it creates 9 partitions regardless of the size of the SD disk (have only tried 16gb and 1gb disks). Given that (as I understand it) the VSR-880 creates partitions of either 512mb or 1 gb, this confuses me)
I'm really keen to start using this unit again, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
