For me Drum replacement software sounded very complicated and time consuming but I found out the opposite is true.I've been working on a heavy metal drum part for a group and wasn't happy with the sound of the snare(too boungy, not enough snap ) so i tried out the software and got a great sounding snare track within about 5 mins .
Highlite the track/phrase etc, click Region Fx,click Drum Replacer,select(kick/snare/tom) then select and audition whatever snare sound you want and your done.
A bonus is that it will remove any bleed that was on the original recorded track.( I adjusted the Threshold control down to only include the snare sound but above the bleed from the other drums.)Anyway, this is exceptional, very useful and user friendly IMO.

I've got to say that's one great use I've found for sample-based software like you're talking about.

It works best on parts that are consistent through a piece of music - not so much with a lot of jazz, or anything that has lots of variance within one song. Then you have to take it section-by-section. But it can still be a great a**-saver!

You also have to consider any latency it produces between the original and the replacement, although I think it's not so much an issue today as even five years ago, with a lot of auto-compensation going on within a lot of DAWs now.

Up, this was from drum tracks with 2 overheads Lt/Rt,Kick and Snare. The kick and snare parts were strong and consistant and removing the bleed from them was nice also.Kinda fun experimenting with this software. No worry about latency as each track has auto delay compensation.

Yeah, delay compensation - that's what I meant. Never had that in the Roland..... too bad, I keep saying, that Roland never saw fit to fully allow people to connect between it and a pc. It'd probably still have a significant place in the world of portable systems today - well it sort of still does, I guess.

My Vs2000s still works great for me as recording interfaces(8 inputs,Fxs while tracking,USB transfer)then editing and mixing in Sonar. This system gives me very few issues to deal with.

Not saying that it doesn't have a place...... obviously still works quite well for many.

The USB transfer thing came about quite late in the VS series and is good. It just isn't what it could have been, because Roland gave up.... plus I gave up on buying into the VS series after the third version still didn't come through. With the price the way it is on used VS units, I might need to look at getting one of the late generation for quick portable recording sometime.

I think that's a good idea, you actually get quite a bit of functionality with the VS(recording, mixing, mastering, editing,USB transfer) etc.. Prices are not to bad for the used VS2000s.

Investing in a Yamaha AW-2400 might be a better investment that the Roland VS recorders because the Yamaha records to wav files and has USB.
