Does anyone have any experience using the Shure SM7B with the 2480 pre's? I'm thinking of buying one, but am wondering if the pre's have enough power to push the mic without distorting.

I have 4 different external mic pre's that I use through the 2480 ... I've only ever tried the on board 2480 mic pre's 0nce when I first got mine and just didn't like them .. I didn't feel it had the power to do much of anything ... I to am wanting to get a SM7B.. I have yet to hear anything bad about the SM7B from anyone .. I've heard of people having really good luck using a sure SM7B with a cloud lifter... (Marty Gilman) recorded his whole CD with that .. I believe ?.. but he is using a computer DAW and not a VS unit..

Yeah, the cloud lifter is pretty popular with the sm7 for a lot of clean boost in the signal.

I'd also advise using a Cloudlifter with the SM7B if possible.
I think a Cloudlifter is really good for ribbon mics as well.

Actually, it's the mic which pushes the pre's, not the reverse. It just might be you find the SM7B needs a bit more amplification when driving the 2480 pre's. Better to stay in the middle of the clean portion of the gain curve than push to the limit, unless you're seeking some possible distortion.

Kyle, LOL, at the end of the day no one cares which pre one employs
so long as the performance is somewhat believable. I know this is a tad off topic but, my ISA one quit on me and was forced to use the 2480 pre for a vox, and you know what? it didn't bother me a bit. Just saying:<)

This mic is killer just like all the reviews, and what you hear online. Its got no hum like most dynamic mics do like the sm57 and so on. I bought a grace m101 so this mic needs a lot of gain like some others, and it has very little noise but its way out of most price range, so that cloud lifter should work well.

I've done quite a bit of recording on the 2480 pre's , and with a little EQ and compression, I've achieved very good results.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the Cloud. I think the 2480 could push it enough, but have a serious concern about distortion.

Hey Power Is your VS Unit the HD, CD, or DVD ??? I heard the tracks you gave a link to .. on another post.. and they sound pretty great... Same with Songjohn 's as well ( john Campoli?) .. I have an HD and a CD version.. I use the external Pre's mainly to boost the signal a bit.. and I like knobs and doohickys ..=O).. I have yet to sit down and really record anything of any quality. yet.. mainly just playing and learning the units.. Am almost ready to start recording a cover CD.. while working on some original music for another CD later..

I dont have any high end Mic pre's like the ISA .. I have some top of the line ..uuhh... Low budget mic pre's..=O). But I like using them .. maybe a placebo effect.. non the less.. I like using them ..+O)

that said.. I am looking at getting a cloud lifter also to ad to my mic pre arsenal ..:O)

Kyle, I have the DVD 2480. To be fair, the recordings I've been doing on the 2480 are pretty darn hot at the source (guitar, drums, etc) so I don't have to push the pre's very much. Another trick I use is doubling (sometimes I triple up) the guitar takes, but it takes a solid player to be able to do so without it being noticeable. I also spend a lot of time tweaking the compression on the drums.

I think the 2480 preamps work great if one understands how to get things right at the source.

I've been using my SM7B through an AEA Ribbon pre and a P Solo. Both have plenty of clean gain to go right through the VS2480HD pre's.

Hey - Just one more + + + for the Cloudlifter - I have 2 AEA ribbon mics and an SM7B and I use the Cloudlifter on all of them. Excellent performance and superior quality - you really will be pleased with the results.

Cheers!

Happy SM7b owner here. Vocals, kick drum, bass guitar, guitar amps. Never got to try the cloud lifter but imagine it does it's job. Typically I'll run the mic into a 312 or 1073 type pre and have no trouble. You should try taking the foam pop screen off for a different sound. It also makes the mic look a little dangerous / lethal.

I only used the VS pres for years until I could afford other outboard options, but the VS pres (2005 models) are pretty darn great if not a bit neutral sounding and technically still in the game since I run other pres through them when recording on the VS.

When I had the chance to record on another VS (older 2003 model) the pres were NOT the same sound, so I can image it varies from rig to rig, improving on especially after the earlier pre-amp component omission situation.
