Thanks to a number of different posts here that I referenced, I am in the process of replacing my failed VS-2480HD drive with a SSD. I say "failed" because last night, as I was shutting down, the drive started to make noise. A tapping sound every other second. When I attempt to restart the unit, it makes the same noise and then stops with a screen message indicating there is no drive (something to that effect). It is the original IBM 30.7GB Deskstar HDD. There isn't much on the drive that isn't backed up (of late I have been using it strictly as a mixer in my home studio, not recording with it), but I would like to see if I can recover what is there to be safe. Some of the posts here make it sound like I may be able to hook the drive up to a PC. So I have ordered an IDE to SATA adapter for my external Orico dock. Though even if I am able to see the files and copy them, I am unsure how I would get them back into the VS-2480. If anyone has had this noise happen and can shed some light on what I can expect, it would be appreciated. MEFlyingV MEFlyingV Space Cadet Registered: 12/29/08 Posts: 20 Loc: New York City	Well I got my Kingwin SATA to IDE Bridge Board ADP-06 and a TEAM GROUP SSD. The ADP-06 is set permanently to MASTER mode. The pins are only for the direction (SATA to IDE, or IDE to SATA). No luck. When set "IDE to SATA". it never gets past the Initialize screen. When I set it "SATA to IDE", it does advance past the initialize screen, goes through the blue setup bar, but then says "no drive found" (or something to that effect. It definitely does not say "no formatted drive found"). I have a Crucial SSD here, but that does not work either. I tried taking a older 3.5" HHD and attaching it to the bridge board. But there is not enough clearance for me to fit it back into the caddy. I took the original IBM HDD and put it into my PC dock using a adapter for the dock. The drive makes the same noise it made in the VS. So i know it is indeed the drive that is my problem (and the drive never did appear in my Windows Explorer). Uggh...I know this video shows it being done successfully. darksith38 darksith38 Planeteer Registered: 03/10/10 Posts: 209	Great good to know this mite not work even though i bought the same drive he had showed in the video.Sorry to hear there's plenty of IDE drives out there you can get on eBay still. Mine has the Maxtor 80GB diamond max 7200rpm that was the original install, and i have the DVD version and was manufactured in DEC 2005 i also have 4 back up IDE drives for the future.

Slabraton Slabraton Planeteer Registered: 12/16/12 Posts: 16566 Loc: California	One way to recover data from a failing hard drive is to put the drive in a sealed plastic bag and then put it in the freezer overnight. Surprisingly, it's worked for me-at least until the drive gets warm. But it gives you enough time to move files off of it.

It's even possible to re-freeze the drive if all the data is not retrieved in one shot. I let it warm up and dry out completely before I did this.
