Hi All,

Just got a VS2000CD. Upon firing it up, getting only the "IDE/HD/CD/OK" popup. Tried the track-4-and-FX2 button press to no avail. Time for new hard drive? Also read about converting to Compact Flash. Is that a good alternative? Thanks much.

Hello:

Drive failure seems likely.

There are some here who have successfully converted their machines to alternative storage media.

It might be simplest for you to just replace the current IDE drive with another, if only to determine whether the rest of the machine is viable.

The procedure is simple. Formatting can take a LONG time, so don't plan a session for an hour after the drive swap!

Hey, thanks so much for the reply/near-confirmation! I opened up the VS and found a Western Digital drive, the use of which is discouraged by Roland itself, as I understand. So I found a sealed NOS Maxtor 80-gig, 7200rpm drive, full retail packaging, for $35. We'll soon see how that works. Thanks again.

That sounds like the perfect solution.

So after the VS spends some weeks on the repair bench, and after trying 3 hard drives, I received this email from the shop:

"It looks the the BOOT ROM is mostly the root cause. I installed the new drive and it spins up and it identified then crashes as before. I tried to perform a forced format but no luck. When I activate the test mode power up it recognized the request but that's as far as it goes."

Can this be fixed, or do I now have a parts-only VS? Thanks ..

who's repair bench?..... a Roland authorized shop?
If so, they should be able to search for and either find the fix for the boot rom they think they need to fix, or not. Otherwise, how else would YOU be able to fix the thing? Roland doesn't offer any support for the VS units anymore, do they?.. outside of maybe spare parts they may still have on the shelves.

Thanks for your reply. It is indeed a Roland-authorized repair facility. And before today, I'd never even heard of boot ROM. I certainly hoped to have had some resolution by now. Beginning to think I'm gonna wind up parting it out; it's got the VS8F-3 and VS20-VGA cards, which somebody may still find worthwhile.

Well, I'm certainly not an authority on Roland repairs, so I hope you find some better news and find a fix for it.

As I turn over possibilities to save this: am I right in assuming the OS for these things is on the main board, and that therefore a main-board transplant could bring the VS back to life?

I would think the OS is on the main board. I've completely pulled the VS2000 apart twice now and can't think of anywhere else it could be. Hell of a job, I doubt you could find even a Roland technician who could do it in under 3 hours. You probably could find a main board gathering dust on some forgotten shelf somewhere in the world, but with parts + labour probably cheaper just buying another VS! I just had the awful thought that perhaps your problem is the result of the internal CR2032 battery going completely dead.
You could try putting in a new one. Good luck.

hi alatkinson, try to disconnect all you can disconnect(cd writer,vs8f-2,
battery cr2032).
i hope you are sure with the hard disk.
after,i m afraid is something like the ram..
the boot is on the os that is on the flash eprom.
well.i have understand your vs2000cd start with the boot and after it stop.
it would be able to receive a reflash os.have you already try to reflash the os via cd or usb?
it sounds strange an os partially damage but you have to try all you can try.
tell me something..

Arriving any moment now: VS-2000CD main board, allegedly 100% operational. This hopefully will allow formatting the drive, thus allowing OS to be loaded -- or so I'm told. Watch this space.

Highly suggest you start your own thread on this very important issue you are having..... You will find it much more likely to receive quick help.

Sorry to say that I don't personally know what to tell you, since I haven't used the 2400.

@JHugs... Agree with Up.

Additionally, suggest you post in the VS 2400/2480 forums.

Good luck!

For what it's worth... I had similar problem as OP after I lost power. It corrupted the file i was working in then would not boot properly. I fixed this by using the usb to copy the other good files onto PC, then did a drive format, then used usb to copy from PC back to VS.

It has been several years, but I think I used this process to bypass the boot up and format the drive after I did the usb transfer. https://www.roland.com/us/support/knowledge_base/201979489/

If your not using one already get a ups battery back up \:\)

Hi Seff, just to clarify, are you saying that you were able to go into the USB Storage mode even though the VS2000 would not boot?

Roland could not fix my VS2000cd when it had a problem right out of the box. I got a new one from them but it was an act of congress just to get them to listen to me. Send the unit To a 12 year old down the street and I'll bet it comes back fixed.

Sorry for the super late reply... yes pretty sure I was able to access storage mode, pre boot up. This was a few yrs ago, but I think I went into storage mode pre boot, transferred all files to pc except the corrupted one that I was in when I lost power, then did the process in the link. Then transferred files back once hd was formatted.
