Is this possible? Is there a key sequence I can hold at startup or something?

Background....
My 2480 hard drive went kaput.
I have moved on to SONAR Platinum and I do NOT want to spend any money on this.
I want to try and set the 2480 up as a control surface for SPLAT but I can't start it without a hard drive installed?

Don't believe so. I looked into this specifically to use the 2480 as a larger surface than the SI-24 we usually use. My thinking was to save wear and tear on the drive as nothing would be recorded to the drive.

The SI-24 does a good job as surface. It has no drive.

There is a way but you need a SCSI Hard Drive or ZIP Drive attached.

DRIVE

IDE DRIVE

This on/off switch lets you start up from a Zip drive with the VS-2480’s internal drive turned off. Select the Zip drive as your current drive, turn IDE DRIVE off, and then restart the VS-2480, making sure a VS-2480-formatted Zip disk is inserted in the Zip drive. To re-activate the internal drive, turn IDE DRIVE on and restart.

Hmm. ZIP drive hadn't occurred to me. That would certainly keep the internal HDD out of play.

I actually have a SCSI ZIP in my equipment locker. It's no good for recording or backup as its capacity is so small. This might give it a new 'raison d'ętre'…

Re: Last post

Would be interesting to know how the waveforms display on the VS2480 i.e. are the quicker?

Anyone done this successfully without any issues and still have all their projects?

Just buy a used internal hard drive for $10 on ebay.

I have a VS-890 which I have been able to start without a hard drive in it. Unless my memory is faulty. But hooking up a zip or SCSI drive will definitely work.

It's also true that you can get a hard drive for it pretty cheap.

I might have to try this with my old zip drive.
