Greetings,

It has been years since I've been on this forum. Several years back, I acquired a Sonar V-Studio 700, which is really awesome, especially the Sonar X3. However, it has been a year or two since I've used it due to life changes, etc.

That being said, I really, really like my original recorder - Roland VS2480-HD. So, somewhat recently, I pulled it out, dusted it off and hooked it up. Fortunately, much of what I learned in the past (which wasn't a whole lot) is coming back to me.

I've got a Plextor Plexwriter 12/4/32 hooked up but I cannot get the 2480 to read .wav files on it that I might want to import. (It could be, it isn't working properly. I seem to recall having some difficulties with it when I was using it a long, long time ago.)

I understand SCSI is "old school" and many external CD burners are using USB. So, I am asking which would be a good one to use on the 2480-HD.

I saw a post by Frank Griffith where he referred to a "Bear ADAT/R-Bus adapter" (from 7-17-2015 under the "SCSI to USB has arrived?!?!" thread) Due to my unfamiliarity with technical terms, I wasn't quite following what he was saying. I am guessing, the threads title has SCSI and USB in it, Frank was giving another option.

Ideally, if I can use my VS-2480 with an external hard drive and a CD burner WITHOUT using SCSI (or using SCSI with an adapter), that would be cool.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, as far as external burners and Roland VS recorders go, there's a scant few burners that will actually work in the way Roland and us users intend for them to - as in, creating audio CDs of a project mix, and/or and probably more importantly, making and loading VS project backups. All of those burners are SCSI burners and most of them were made by Plextor - the PX-W1210T was probably the most common one.

Basically, there were the three Roland branded burner versions - I, II and III (If I haven't confused II and III together) and they had a few brands and models of burners installed in them at various stages of their market life. One of the early versions had a JVC burner in it, for instance. I think the Plextor models that work with the VS are probably the most accessible on the used market.

One very, very good option for 2480 users (and whatever VS models can do wav import and export) is to use a hardware/software solution for the PC called VirDis (it has its own forum now, by the way, scan down the list of forums and you will find it). It's currently still stuck in the PCI card state, but also still being developed and the developer participates as his schedule allows, on the forum here. VirDis allows a person to use the PC's cd/dvd burner to function just like the few external burners I mentioned earlier, since VirDis fools the VS into accepting the PC burner as a legit, approved burner. VirDis also depends on the SCSI bus....... there's no getting around the SCSI connection in order to use a CD burner with the 2480 at this time.

So, at least as far as reloading your old backup discs into your 2480, that's sort of where it's at.

You might try running a cd burner cleaner disc in your burner a few times to see if you can get something going to correct whatever it is that's keeping your from loading projects. But it could be that the burner needs more extensive maintenance and that might require pulling it apart and cleaning it from the inside and it could even need realigning, neither of which should be done by someone who has no clue about how to handle the innards of a cd burner.

Hope that's a start for you.

Thanks for your response. I will get a CD cleaner today to see if that'll work. After all, it has been many years since I've used it so a dirty lenses certainly is in the realm of possibility.

Your input on the VirDis was helpful. I didn't know, at first, what "VirDis" was and then learned it meant "Virtual Disc". I found a video by a John Miker, which was very, very helpful. When I get home, I will definitely look at it (as well as your post) more closely to see if I can get rockin' and a rollin' on this thing.

So, am I to understand, and external CD burner using USB cannot be used on the VS2480 even if a SCSI to USB adapter is used?

Thanks

Oh, another question.

If I connect my PC to the VS-2480 via VirDis, will I be able to burn a red book ready CD on the PC's CD burner from the VS-2480's mastering room (i.e. the pair of tracks)?

Correct... as far as I am aware.
Don't know of anybody that's done so.

Not having a 2480, I can't verify what all works in the CD portion of VirDis, but I'm sure that's meant to be one of the features.

Check with the developer, Bill Casey.
He can be reached through the contact seller link in his ebay VirDis listing - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Roland-VS-2480-1...4TZM5yegIgxiEYQ

The software only STORES your files -- You will need another software that can burn a WAV for CD ..

Even better you can burn 'virtual CD-R Masters' so the CD image can stay on your hard drive until required. You can play and review your virtual CD-R Master/s until you are ready to burn it/them, unlike the old days of burning the CD-R Master only to find out you aren't happy with it later on. Also, you could upload the CD Image to the cloud or copy to external storage i.e. a thumb drive. The mastering house can make a CD-R Master/CD-R pre-Master from that. When you access the 'virtual CD-R Master' via the VS2480 all the tracks will display just as if a CD were placed in the VS2480 CD Burner (CD PLAYER).

In reality you may never need to ever burn a CD-R Master ever again. So if CDs become redundant and they could, your hard work wont.

Paul
