So, I have some guitar tracks that are not quite where I want them to be where the sound is concerned. Have tried various things including EQ, effects, compression, etc.

Can I use an external effects/compression unit and loop it back into the track? If so, how?

Why not?

Send the guitar audio out to your external effects and record the processed audio to a different track in the vs recorder.

Ok, so what if I have these tracks I want to effect externally, bounced to a stereo track? I'm assuming it would be two out and two in?

Concerning the stereo track output: Would I use Aux out (2outs), connect to the effects unit/out into 2480, then rout the aux tracks to two new tracks in the 2480? My concern is that I wrote the stereo track with certain pans that give it a lot of depth, and I don't want to lose those pans.

Edit: Forgive my ignorance. I've never done this before. Thanks in advance.

as long as the external unit(s) is/are stereo in and stereo out, then you will get back what you put in.

Your new 2480 inputs will also need to be either stereo linked, or mono and panned hard left and right.

If all is right - then your new stereo pair in the 2480 should have exactly the same stereo image that the original pair has.

Thanks as usual, Uptildawn. Great info. I wonder what would happen to the pans, etc if I ran two tracks of mono in, and out? Being the genius that I am, I never considered the effects unit needing a stereo in/out.

depends on how your external effects are designed and how you set them up. If the effects unit is full stereo and doesn't change (add, blend, etc.) the left and right inputs, then it will keep two mono inputs just as you set the input controls on the effect. What you end up with on the output of the effects unit depends on what the unit does to the two signals and how you have the outputs set up.... and of course, what you hear through the VS on the way back in depends on how you route the two return inputs.

If the effects unit has its own headphone jack, listen to it (using any routing options it might have) to see what it's doing to the inputs you send from the VS.
