Can someone please explain...in layman’s terms, what RBUS is used for? I have an MacBook Pro from 2009 which maybe why I’m not in the loop with RBUS.

It's just roland's proprietary way of communicating with other roland gear. Connecting two rbus devices allows them to move 8 tracks from one to the other digitally.
Only a few devices are rbus equipped. It is not the same pin layout as the regular older computer cable that you may have seen before.
Peace, Ian

We use the RBUS for all our I/O digital effects == couldn't work without it ~!

Can't think of a way you'd use R-BUS with a MacBook. But, as you're posting in the VS-2480 section, here are a couple of ways I use it with mine: * an Edirol DA2496 to provide 8 more ins/outs * a Roland MV-8800 to keep data in the digital domain when transferring/mixing
Likewise, you could use it for connecting the XV-5080 synth.

Not for me then, I don’t need or want anymore inputs or outputs. I’m more for keeping it simple now days....
”less is more” who said that?
Just thought it might enhance my workflow.

FWIW, too bad RBUS is just conceived as a 'point-to-point' connection.
In other words, too bad most RBUS-equipped pieces of gear just have ONE RBUS connector.
Say I want to add mic-preamps to a VSR-880, I connect an ADA-7000. For easy monitoring (having faders & FX) let's add a VM-3100Pro as well to the VSR-880, but the RBUS connector is already taken...
In this case the alternative is to make those connections in the analog domain, but you'll get the picture, the 'BUS'-part of RBUS isn't 'as BUS' as it could have been.
Same holds of cource for ADAT etc, but at least these don't use 'BUS' in their names ;-)

Except, I think, that ADAT may not be the best example of a likewise system, since many ADAT-equipped pieces of gear contain both in and out connections.

Aha! You're right, I realize! ADAT not having IN & OUT glued into one link actually gives more possibilities than RBUS.
If those three devices would have used RBUS in such a 'split ADAT-like fashion' I could for instance have used this:
ADA-7000 --> VSR-880 --> VM-3100Pro
(with the ADA-7000 being the master CLK)
But RBUS can't.
Interesting, since as we know RBUS is just the electrical version and some flipped bits... no reason it couldn't be made splitted...
But it's 2018, I guess it's best not have some kind of RBUS-v2... (with I & O splitted)

Not anymore, as said it'd be a bit 'beyond relevance'. As convenient as the single cable is, just realized RBUS could have been just a bit more useful (for hookup of more than a few devices) than is was with the chosen single cable-format.
