I have three VS-890s. About a year ago, one machine stopped putting out an audio signal. Apparently everything else works except the audio outputs (ALL of them).

Now the exact same thing has happened to the other VS-890s. Everything works on them except the audio appears in the meters but there is no sound. If I move the projects to my VSR-880, they work, so it's only the audio output (on all outputs) which is failing.

Anybody know if this is a problem common to the 890 or have any suggestions?

What steps have you taken to troubleshoot the loss of audio?
There's waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too many possibilities to speculate.

Other than that, can't say that I've heard of many other, if at all, audio loss issues with the VS series.

I spent hours dealing with it. The possibilities aren't endless. I've isolated the issue to the audio outputs after the mixer but before the audio is sent to the various outputs (digital and analog).

The machines record fine, but can't be monitored. When it was only a single machine which was messed up, I was able to move projects via an external hard drive. So the problem has to be between the mixer and the output stage.

It's a small problem, but makes the machines useless. I don't think repair is a viable option but I would hate to junk them.

Have you tested each machine individually at least?

As you say - endless possibilities.... should we just guess?
Give us some concrete troubleshooting steps you've taken, so we can "see" what you've tried.

You always have 4 audio outputs, plus additional headphones output ..

You can send audio via the mixbus to Aux Out, and to the Main out.
In your settings MIX must be armed for each track that you want to hear.

I use my VS-890 to monitor the digital outputs of my VS 880EX.

2 recorders - 1 headphone - 12 tracks playing ..

The Main Out of the VS-890 goes to my amplifier, where I can listen on my studio monitors for mixing ..

Works like a charm ..

I guess I'm not being clear. There is no audio output to any of the outputs although the signal is getting recorded and shows up on the meters. and if I put a project on the VSR 880, it plays back fine. So the issue is after the sum, but before the final output.

Does any one machine work as it ought to by itself, not hooked up to another - just one VS hooked up to speakers, headphones, monitor amp/speakers, or whatever?

If no one of them outputs audio to headphones or speakers, then you do indeed have a very rare problem.

Did you try to reset the mixer?

You mean format the drives?

I think my original suspicion is correct: carpet burn.

No...reset the mixer.

I suspect a routing problem that you have created across multiple devices...not hardware failure.

Thanks, Wish. I will try that although each machine broke down seperately.
