I'm not at my studio just now, but I want to route stems and some individual tracks out for processing (in house) and import them back into the 1680 in real time. Probably using La2a or something similar...This way I can rent it for a short time during the mixing phase.

Curious: What is the best routing option, and has anybody had good success with this idea?

Your thoughts will be appreciated!

routing of individual tracks and groups of tracks on the 1680 is pretty darn limited...... but maybe you can make use of the direct outs for individual tracks - direct out bypasses the mixer completely - no fx, no processing........ just dry tracks. But you can pass up to 8 tracks at a time that way. You hook up rca cables to every pair of rca jacks on the rear of the unit for this.... not that you have to use all at once. It routes the first 8 channels in one bank and 9-16 in the other bank........ can't mix say 5,6,7,8,9,10 in one pass, for instance.

You can use AUX outs to derive a separate set and mix of track combinations than the main outs, which would let you do at least two submixes at one time... maybe three?.... you'll have to read up on how many separate mixes you can get with this combo - 2 or 3 I'm pretty sure....
You would set up the AUX out tracks with their main channel faders turned down, so as not to send them to the mains at the same time.

It's been ages since I did any of this on the VS, so sorry to be vague. Maybe somebody will pop in with better details.

Thanks, really appreciate your input!...It seems possible...What I want to do is paint with some expensive hardware after recording the track or sub mixes...I'm off to the plain brown manual. :-)
