HI All,
I made a video where I put an SSD in place of my HDD in my VS2480. In one of my vs2480s I disconnected the fan.

Well today I realized that it is not a good idea after a long session. My VS started to run quite hot. I quit while I was ahead.

I intend to connect the fan tomorrow.

Cheers,
Ian

I was going to do the same after buying a fan but it had the wrong power lead (3 prong instead of 2)... still haven’t got the ssd drive to work either!

I posted this in the 2400 section but it would work in 2480 as well.

So I just swapped out the original whining 40Gb harddisk on the VS2400 and also changed out the fan to a quieter one. \:\)

The IDE to Sata board I use works in both 2480 and 2400, and I'm using an Intel 520 Series SSD, note that the 320 doesn't work. The fans are the same model as well. I've swapped it out with a Noctua NF-R8 redux-1200 and prefer this to the Silenx Ixtrema which has a really quiet but audible ticking sound.

Silence is bliss.

Hi Bran

Do you know how if any of the bigger size 520 series ssd’s work? I can get a 180 gig cheape than a 120!

Thanks

Officially, the 2480 recognizes a maximum of 120gb. There are some users reporting success with 160gb

Anything above that will be ignored.

Yes, any size of the series would work. Just that the VS would only register up to 120GB so you only get a maximum of 11 partitions is 11.5GB each. I'm using a 180GB myself.

Hard Drive isn't the issue it's the power supply that the fan is required for. The only fan that can be removed is the small fan in the Hard Drive caddy, specifically the VS2480HD.

138G/Byte is the VS2480 max limit for data.

I just ordered two noctua fans. If they work well I will make a before and after video about them.
Thanks,
Ian

Noctua NF-R8 redux-1200
I am still waiting for my fan to arrive. Will it fit the VS2480 or will I have to cut the wire and put on a two pin connector?

Reading the input above is why I bought it. However the details are lacking regarding the connection.

Thanks,
Ian

It comes with a 3pin connector. You will need to cut and use the original 2pin connector that is on the Sanyo fan. Not a difficult thing to do. I solder them before using electrical tape to bind them. Or you can just twist them and use electrical tape to make sure the two bare wires do not touch.
As for the connection, just trial and error and make sure the fan blows outwards.
Cheers,
Brandon

Hi All,
I just changed out the fans in my two VS2480s this weekend. Lots of splicing of wires and unscrewing. This noctua fan is silent. It is a wonderful upgrade. I am in the process of making a video showing before and after.

I also disconnected the hard drive caddy fan. Mind you I no longer have a HDD in my VS units. I switched to SSD drives and they do not heat up. THe little hard drive caddy fans are noisy.
Now the units are silent. Can't believe I did not do this sooner. Not that it affected my recordings anyway.
Cheers,
IAn

Hi, I want to do this and would be grateful for the video if you get a chance. I did the HD to SSD from your video and it worked perfectly.

Great job Ian! Very nicely done.
Something I did differently was to discard the sleeve that came with the Noctua. I found it too long and stiff.

Cheers,
Brandon

Hi Ian, any chance you could do a little video showing which screws, how to take the 2480 apart to get at the fan. :-)

Hi Ian,

Which two wires of the three are used on the new fan... which fan wire goes to the red VS wire and black VS wire?
Thanks!
