Roland VS1680 or Roland VSR-880

Hi there,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but just looking for some opinions.
Looking to pick up a VS recorder. If given the choice between a VS1680 with 2 effects cards installed, or a VSR-880 with VS8F-2 effects card installed for a similar price, what is generally considered the better option and why?

That would be a bit of a tough call for me -
the 1680 is a complete recorder and mixer - the mixer with physical faders and a much larger display than the VSR would be worth a lot where efficient/quick workflow is concerned.
The 1680 also can record and playback up to 16 tracks/channels at once. It's hard drives can be partitioned to up to 2GB per.
It can use a bit over 16GB of hard drive, too (8 partitions of just over 2GB each).
The VSR is an 8 track recorder/playback machine and its hard drives are limited to 1GB partition size (I don't recall how many partitions it can use, but I am guessing 8, like it's other brothers).
All of its functions are buried in menus, including control of faders and its display, although backlit, is very small.
The VSR has 24 bit converters, vs. the 1680 20 bit converters - a step up and worth considering.
The VSR is rackmountable by design - the 1680 would have to be put into a rack shelf/drawer and not exactly convenient for a rack case.
The VSR has R-Bus, besides SCSI, which allows for the passing of 8 channel digital in and out to an appropriately R-bus configured piece of hardware, including to PCI card for computers. The availability of such hardware is not what it was, because the whole line of Roland devices is out of production now - at least I think it is....... you should check on that, if it interests you.

Other than those things and probably a few other minor things I've not thought of, the two machines are essentially the same in function and overall quality and capabilities.
Having the 2 FX cards is definitely a plus in either case.
For me, it would depend on how I intend to use it. Rackmount vs. desktop - 20 bit vs. 24 bit - 16 track vs. 8 track - larger hard drive and partition capacity (in one physical drive) vs. half the capacity at once of partitions and possibly hard drive size - relatively large display vs. tiny display - easy to read software mixer, effects settings, editing functions, etc. vs. crammed display info on a tiny screen.... it all depends on the need.

I voted a long time ago for the 1680.
Way easier to see the display, twice as many tracks, etc.

1680 is worth it for the lcd display alone. Plus I like the long hardware faders, and lots of buttons. You can sit down in front of it. Hook up a guitar and mic and away you go.
no computer to boot up, no web browser to muck with and no mouse. Limits distractions and lets you focus on what you're doing. Also the manual will help if you have problems with insomnia....
