We all know the internal VS drives that are compatible, there being a dedicated thread on it, but by any chance does anyone know if any 3.5" 80 pin SCSI drives that can be used in a backup system via SCSI? Or, is lit like the internal IDE drives where there are ones the VS won't play nicely with? IDE drives and SCSI drives are not the same thing. Can anyone name compatible SCSI 80 pin drives they KNOW to be compatible for backup SCSI use?

I'm not sure what drives are in the SongVault External HD that was previously available, but they were SCSI. I count 50 pins on the external connector. Maybe there is an adapter that will work? Someone here might have an idea about that.

the drive inside a SongVault may be a standard IDE drive - probably is, in fact. SCSI drives have usually been much more expensive dollar for GB. If they are IDE, then there's also a bridge card to adapt the IDE drive to SCSI.

The bridge card may be an ACARD 7720U, since it is probably the most common of the few bridge cards I've heard of that work with the VS. They were cheaply available on the used market 10-12 years ago, or so, but then suddenly (in my view) became scarce.

I'll have to unpack and look inside my SongVault unit to see.

I just know the connector on the rear of the case is 50 pin.

The ACARD 7720U is available, but on eBay it is usually stupidly expensive (I think) for what it really is and does.
I have an empty case for building another songVault, but the cost is prohibitive for something I really don't need right now.

Exactly why I stopped building my own external units - the first acard I got way back about 10-12 years ago (I think) cost me only 35.00 used. The next one ran me over 100 and the last one was over 150. I got that last one new and at a discount.

There's a couple on Reverb for less than 200 right now, but I wouldn't even consider them, myself. It's just too much!

You paid 135.00 for what?..... an external hard drive, a SongVault, or an Acard 7720U?

I hope my assumption is an external drive (whether SongVault, or otherwise), so that my suggestion makes a bit of sense.

Is this the only SCSI device you have hooked up, or do you have more than one in a chain?
Is there a CD drive in this unit, or do you have one in the chain (if there's a chain)?
Do you have a terminator block on the second SCSI port on the drive box if it's by itself or the last box in a chain?
Do you know that your SCSI cable or cables are working?
Have you checked to make sure there are no bent pins in the scsi cable(s)?
By "Having problem(s) getting my 2480 to recognize it", do you mean it doesn't recognize it at all, or does it recognize it in the device list but doesn't work, or does it just not work at all?
Does it power up? Can you hear the drive running? Are there working activity lights on it and do they light up?

You need to give us a lot more information.

I paid 135.00 for the rare IDSC21-E adapter scsi to ide. I took the scsi cdr out of my exteral cdr recorder which of course is scsi and put the adapter in so it would read and write on my IDE hard drive.. the drive is running scsi cable is connected from 2480 to exteral to exteral unit with the convertor in it. this is the only unit in the chain. but the 2480 only showing interal IDE and interal scsi dvd. I've been playing with the jumpers but no luck as of yet.

I got my 2480 to recognize the third drive with a long delay and it show a 3 after recognizing the main, drive dvd drive. But when it finish loading there is no 3rd drive showing up.it should show a 2nd scsi drive since the new drive is in the external cdr unit. i'm trying to get into my old hard drive that showed error in 1st partition but all the other partition are good
I really need to get a few projects off of it.
anyone out there
know the jumper settings on the IDSC21-E Adapter?
Thanks

Are you saying that you have one external unit that contains both a cdr/dvdr burner and the old hard drive, or are you saying that the old hard drive has been put in the cdr case and the cdr has been removed?

What about termination?....... you hadn't responded to that part of my earlier post.

taking a long time to boot (relative to how long it used to boot) may not be that out of the ordinary. My own external unit with an IDE/SCSI bridge card takes a long time to boot, but it also works fine once booted up.

It's certainly possible that those wires you took out and didn't hook up to the bridge may hold the key..... right?

I'd do some research for details on the bridge card connections as well as those wires in the cdr box, if I were wanting it to work...

in regards to Termination the external burner unit is the only link straight from the 2480. the 4 jumper wires probably need to go some where, but where? if I put the original burner back in and connect the jumper wires back where they come from, the 2480 sees the external burner. and it reads Scsi0 and Scsi1 and of course the main Ide drive. So if I can figure out where to put the jumper wires, I think it will work.
