Mastering Room (Track-at-once/2480) questions:
1. When using TAO in Mastering Room on a 2480 is it typical to always/usually write _another_ track subsequently?
2. If so, and one knows that a track will be the last one is 'Finalize ON' used for that last track? Or, after the track is written, just 'Finalize Only' used?
3. In the case where a _single_ track is written is clicking "Finalize-Only' the appropriate next action?
4. Or can a user go away and come back to write more tracks later. For VirDIS this means closing (saving 'current state') and then re-opening the emulation file at a later time.

Any help/comments appreciated ..

I still don't use the 2480 - 1680 here - but I can help with this one.

1- I don't know 'typical' practices with 2480 users, but the only time TAO would be used is with the expectation of writing other tracks later on, since the disc can't be played on a standard player if not finalized.

2- It should make no difference when finalize is turned on, if 'finalize only' is an option, since it implies that a disc can be finalized as a single operation - whether or not a VS machine behaves as its features suggest may be another matter.

3- Finalize Only, or Finalize On will/should produce the same end result. I think it's simply a matter of convenience to turn it on at the same time one is writing a track, if the goal is to have a disc playable on a standard player immediately after the operation.

4- If wanting to write TAO style, then a user SHOULD be able to walk away and come back later to finish the disc, whether to add more tracks, or to finalize only. If it doesn't work that way, then it shouldn't even be allowed, otherwise it's wasted energy, in my opinion.

A person wanting to write a red book quality disc for duplication would/should only write a DAO style. If they do not, then it is my understanding that a duplicator will reject the disc and require a new one made anyway.... that's always been my understanding.

Not to say that there aren't reasons to build a disc using TAO, but not for final release/duplication purposes.

Excellent reply, my good man. I pretty much deduced all that prior to posting but wanted to ping the 'experts'. #4 ('saving state') is the current problem ..

Wonder if that TAO is worth the effort today?
I get the strong impression that fewer and fewer people are even interested in using CDs for much of anything anymore. And for the few that have a genuine need for something like TAO, it seems that it would be far simpler to just export the mixes, one at a time, to the pc. They can be played and compared on a pc without even burning to disc. And when there's a batch collected, even burned to a disc with a pc program later and finalized as a DAO with far fewer hassles than what I expect you are running into trying to get VirDis to do the 'saving state'.

That's just my opinion, of course. Somebody's bound to have a point of view that will blow mine out of the water here sooner or later. \:\)

Again, very good pt. and, in fact, am considering a pause on that. DAO _is_ working OK :).
