Hi, I am new to this community. I recently picked up a vs2480cd and a dr880 drum machine.
Unfortunately neither of the manuals gives a quick guide to hooking these up.
I have the digital out of the DR880 going to the Digital input ( rca orange jacks) of the VS
I read pages 48,132 and 134 of the manual, but I still don't get it.
I searched the net and there is not one article or video of this(weird)
Hopefully someone can give me an easy walk through ?

I tried looking for information in the DR880 manual and there's very little about the digital out. I could not find the sample rate of the DR880. And there doesn't seem to be a setting for whether it generates or receives clock.

Basically one unit has to be set to sync from the digital signal coming from the other unit. I'm assuming that the VS2480 would be set to get it's clock from the incoming digital stream since the DR880 only sends.

If you go to UTILITY->PROJECT PARAMETER you will see a Master Clock section. Click on COAXIAL IN. You should see a message something like COAXIAL IN LOCK.

Click EZ-ROUTING->ROUTING VIEW. In the PATCH BAY section on that screen connect the coaxial in to a channel pair. I usually use 23/24.

I think that's it. Play the DR800 and turn up the input channels you selected.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything

Steve

Hi, I own both.
It can be tricky connecting the VS2480 to a Boss DR880.
The GOOD:
Whether the VS is in M24, M16, 48khz, 44.1khz once you connect the digital cable between the two units and turn on the VS2480 Digital In-Lock you will get sound. (edit of course only 44.1khz will be the proper pitch)

The BAD:
The Digital In-Lock is not a very accurate source when the digital out source is from a DR880.

You may want to use some other digital clock source in between the two. Though that may be tricky since the DR880 only has Digital Out and not a Digital In. I will let the people who use external digital timers chime in. I do not have a separate external dedicated digital clocking source.

To me, it is better to use the analog outputs of the DR880 because though the digital has a better signal to noise ratio, it is not phenomenally better. More importantly you can use the VS2480 midi sync track as your time source and then you are in a very accurate world of SYNC.

The Midi time (Midiclock or synctrack) will not be the source once you are using DIgital in -Lock. You will be able to use midi MMC.

WHich reminds me that the other BAD was that the DR880 will not work as the master. YOu will need to make the VS2480 the MASTER in these connections. I recall the DR880 not able to control the VS2480.

I will make a video today, since there is a blizzard and I am not at work.

Cheers,
Ian

I have the settings for running the 2480 as master to the 880 as slave if you want to use midi. I've been using them together for years.
On the 2480 "Midi Parameter"-
Midi Out/Thru set to "Thru."
Device ID set to "17 " Control Local Sw set to "On"
SysEx.Rx Sw set to "On" SysEx. Tx Sw set to "On"
Mixer Control Type set to "C.C". Scene P.C. Rx Sw set to "off"
Effect P.C. Rx Sw set to "off" Effect C.C. Rx Sw set to "off"
MMC Mode set to "Master" MMC Source set to "Midi"

SYNC Parameter

Sync Mode set to "INT" Sync with gap set to "ON"

Ext Sync Mode set to "midi in"
Sync Offset Time set to "00:00:00:00 Frame Rate set to "30"
Error Level set to "5".
Midi out Sync Gen set to "SyncTr" R-Bus1 Sync Gen set to "off"
R-Bus2 Sync Gen set to "off"

Thanks. These parameters may help me sync my R70 drum machine as slave to the VS via MIDI. I will try them at the weekend. I have no idea why MIDI out/thru has to be set to ‘Thru’ but I’m sure that currently I have it set to ‘out’.

You're welcome. I forgot to mention, those settings work just for the running of the two units. I still have to run the audio outs on the drum machine into two input tracks on the VS. Hope it works for you.
