Thanks!! The part with instructions above I copy/pasted from the MS website...if it's a typo it's theirs lol

I'll search as you advise and report back!

I don't understand why MS has never just made a copy of the file available in their windows updates, or through their downloads pages..... it sure would save people a lot of headaches - it appears to happen VERY often and over the course of many years and numerous operating system versions now.... still problems in windows 10, too.

Check this out, if you haven't already - -

I found a legit copy through this link/website (linked to from a series of messages at the Microsoft website) - https://www.ocxme.com/files/mscomctl_ocx

Use the green download now button below the file description – not one of the blue start the download buttons (those are ads). You will probably get a bot-check thing to verify you are a real person. Complete the request and it will start your download. Save As to a place on your hard drive – don’t run from the download link.

Further down the MS website forum message pages - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...0e-489cdb070efb - there’s a message about 1/3 the way down the page from ElderN that starts:
“If you are seeing a message like this:
Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.
And then following some instructions to register the OCX file and then you see a message like this:”

also in ElderN's message it states – “Save the file to your desktop or someplace you can find it.
If you are using a 32-bit version of Windows copy and paste the file into this folder (assuming Windows is installed in the Windows folder on your C drive):
c:\Windows\system32 “

and then gives instructions on how to register it – there are also some images to help.

Seems that it should work, but some people had problems – mostly with the person’s OneDrive link, where they were supposed to find the file, but it was no longer there. That’s why I pointed you to the ocxme link at the top of my reply here. I downloaded it just now and checked the file with MS security essentials and it checks okay… (I’m not guaranteeing their download, just saying it checked out for me just now. By the way, I evidently went through this in 2014, shortly after putting this Win 7 machine to work.

That's awesome!! I'll try that today! Thanks...

I looked (insofar as I am able anyway) and don't see it in my Windows System32 area...I'll first try again to fond it on board today...

Thanks for the link and checking things out!

I'll report back shortly.

I did discover that my system is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit OS

So Im looking onboard for the file...if I download it from your prior link I assume it gets put into the appropriate 64 bit folder?

No....... you need to save it to your hard drive in a place you can find (I keep a folder just for downloads, for instance). Then unzip it (right click on the folder and choose "extract all". The default location for the unzipped folder and contents should be to the same folder that the zipped folder was saved to, so let it unzip to that folder.

Now you can open the unzipped folder and copy the 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' into the proper System folder.

Since you are running a 64bit system afterall, you will need to follow those instructions you had about locating and registering to the 64bit system folder, etc., instead of those instructions I gave you for the 32bit system.

I think you will still end up with a problem, because I don't think that VSWE works in a 64bit environment. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe you can run it in compatibility mode, or something (which I know next to nothing about, since I don't operate in a 64bit environment).

If VSWE won't work after you've registered the MSCOMCTL.OCX file, you may need to search out a 32bit windows pc to do your VSWE extractions. The .wav files it exports are fully compatible with any windows or mac computer systems. It's just the program itself that may not be.

Thanks for your thoughts. Not sure about the 64 bit/vs 32 bit system issue...so far I have the VirDis drive formatted and working (song copied there from ide, and loaded and VS sees it) but not having the WAV file tool would be a huge bummer if I can't get that fixed...

I think I'm in over my head technically, that much is certain. I'll keep at 'er.

Maybe send a private message off to Bill Casey - the VirDIS MAN!- http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showprofile&User=14030 .
He could answer the 64bit vs 32bit question and maybe the mscomctl issue as well...... If VirDIS is working in your 64bit environment, I'd bet VSWE must be too.

Am posting my 'OCX problem' text file below but before I do I will report my own frustration with the MSCOMCTL.OCX file issue. I have, of course, various OS partitions on different PCs and drives, etc. I checked my current platforms and VSWE is working on XP and Win7-32 but NOT on Win7-64 or Win10-64 (getting 'Run-time error '13': type mismatch) - haven't checked Win10-32 yet.
Actually, I was going to make a separate thread just for this so that someone might have a definitive answer. This is not an ASC utility but one we have permission to distribute from the author who, I guess, I'd better contact.
Recent customer experience: via a remote GoToAssist session I tried (in vain) to get VSWE working for him and said several reboots _might_ be needed. Days later he informed me that he got it working. I'll go back and see what did the trick. In the meantime below is our 'help' file:

---------------------------------------
VS Wave Export missing file error message
-----------------------------------------
If, when invoking VS Wave Export, an error message pops up indicating that the MSCOMCTL.OCX file is missing, please consult this link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2746232

However, what this link does not state is that the MSCOMCTL.OCX file must be 'copied' to the C:\windows\system32 folder before executing the referenced command in a Command Prompt. When opening a Command Prompt window select 'Run as administrator' by first right-clicking on it and making that selection.

FYI: When trying to drag a VirDIS (HDD) file into the VS Wave Export window, you MUST close the running emulation first; otherwise the *.HDD file can’t be opened by VSWE.

------ Instructions reproduced from the above link ------
Note: This needs to be run with administrator permissions

1.     Click Start, type cmd.

2.     Right-click the cmd icon, and then click Run as Administrator.

3.     At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Regsvr32 /s c:\windows\system32\mscomctl.ocx
---------------------------------------------------=========

NB: ASC would 'like' to support any/all VS Wave Export issues but it is not our utility. We have only been granted permission to distribute it by the author, Danial Aue.

Thanks Bill...I'd be very interested to see if you get any further info re how to get the Windows 7 64 bit working with the wav tool..I'll pass this along to my nephew Ben in the meantime...

The wav function is very much needed so we'll keep at it on this end. I need to share tracks both directions via email...otherwise the storage Virtual drive is working great.

But as an alternative to get the wav working (easier?) can we reinstall the Windows 7 OS to the 32 bit version and just install the VirDis card we purchased again? What might you guys advise there?
Rick

Why not install Win7 32 as a dual boot on that pc, so you don't have to lose the 64 version - much as Bill is doing:
QUOTE
I have, of course, various OS partitions on different PCs and drives, etc. END QUOTE

Or, if you have a computer liquidator located in your area, you might go pick up a 32bit machine already loaded for cheap. You could put it to use as a dedicated VirDIS/VSWE machine - maybe even install Reaper on it and keep it connected to your VS via VirDIS... hook the machine up to a network router to connect to your other computer(s) and you've got a quick and easy way to transfer your audio tracks back and forth.

That's essentially what I did with the last 3 recording PCs I put together. I had to do very little to "clean them up" of excessive general and office-duty software usually loaded up on the machines I've seen (they often come from school and office systems). The best thing about a basic Reaper/VirDIS system is that you don't need a lot of power and memory like so many bloated computers you buy off the shelf at the Best Buys of the world.

Thanks for that idea. I'll ask my nephew if we can do that dual boot. That sounds like the most seamless...and I already have Reaper on it my PC and it is, in fact, a dedicated VirDis/Reaper machine...so the 32 bit tweak to the dual boot might be just the thing!

Guys: I'm not completely sure this is a 64 vs. 32-bit issue - it could be related to something else. I've emailed the VSWE author; let's hope he replies.

Happy Update:. My nephew Ben who did the VirDis install visited. He found that VirDis brought the file to us, but he had to go to Bill's MS link above (thanks Bill!) and place the file into the windows directory in the right location...

Then we made a WAV file from the song I had on the VirDis drive, and it worked. Yay!

64 bit version.

So the only thing I'm working on now is why the WAV is only present in the left channel...but I'll figure that out.

Thanks everybody!

That would be because the wav files generated are single channel/track files. If you want to hear a stereo mix file (for instance), then you need to export both channels and then open them together in a program that can either play multiple tracks and then mix/render them into a stereo wav file (such as Reaper), or that can blend two mono tracks/wav files into one stereo track (not sure if something like Audacity can do this).

It is a bit disconcerting to only hear one side of a mix, isn't it? \:\)

A giant congrats and a big sigh of relief that you solved the problem and it turned out to be rather painless at that.

A quick follow up: As I might have indicated above, the wav export tool wasnt working on my main pc, but we set up Reaper and the wav tool on my laptop, network syncd them so that everything I back up on my studio automatically transfers to my laptop file, and that worked great.

Now, mysteriously the main pc works with the wav tool also, so I assume that there might have been some subsequent update or download from Bill? if not, then for whatever reason its all running perfectly!

Thanks - will keep that link around >>> we did have that problem awhile back .... but , just never ventured to VSWE again. We have Reaper for our main 2 track /render system. But still prefer mixing in the 2480.
