I’m considering a VS-1880. Are there differences in functionality/editing capabilities etc between the 1880 and the 2480 apart from number of tracks? I’ve been holding out for a 2480 but can get an 1880 for about a third of the cost.

the 2480 was a large leap over the 1880.
there were numerous feature changes and additions that make the whole workflow better, as well as making it a little more compatible with modern pc hardware and sharing (at the time - vga monitor, mouse, track export/import....... probably more).
Sorry I don't have more specifics, since not actually owning a 2480 most of what I have learned has been through my interaction with the VS Planet community for many years.

The VirDIS hardware/software system for pc is a whole lot more useable with the 2480 than with the more limited capabilities of the 1880 as well - check out VirDIS sometime and really consider getting it, or showing its developer, Bill Casey, that he has support to finish his usb version, which is nearing completion - http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1545552#Post1545552

no sample pads on the 1880 that I can recall. the 1880 was really just a more thought out 1680, with a couple extra channels and slightly better converters.

Check the 1880 manual - that should tell you for sure. It's easy to find on Roland's support pages.
