What does that battery support? If I change out the battery am I at risk of losing all of my projects? Any and ALL info on this is appreciated. ROLAND Corp - was not even willing to talk to me to answer this simple question.

i've changed mine twice since i bought my 2480 new
in 2001, without any problems what so ever. i don't
believe the battery has anything to do with saving
your projects.

Make sure you backup your songs just in case. It never hurts to be careful.

if you take a hard drive out of a computer, do you lose your data? I can imagine the conversation at Roland. "hey some space cadet just asked if he removes the cmos battery from his recorder, will he lose his data..." lol

I think it's a perfectly reasonable assumption and fear that says if you take a battery out of something, data may be lost. Why else would there be a battery backup in an electronic device that gets its power generally from an ac outlet than to store some sort of data?

Changed mine twice with no problems. All your project data is on the hard drive and will not be effected by changing the battery. Not sure exactly what the battery does but it will be internal things like the date and time. The manual is vague on exactly what it does.

Let's remember that "the only stupid question is the question unasked". The OP was practicing appropriate caution.

The VS battery maintains date/time on the machine. Not all units have them, for example, the VS-880 has none.

Have you ever come across a warning stating to change your cmos battery or you will lose any data stored on your hard drive?

Bit harsh blair, do you know the answers to everything in the world?

If not you must be feeling like BobA.

If you don't know, you don't know, what ever the subject.

Some people don't know computing. Some people are wary of computers. Some people don't know what the term cmos is, let alone how it relates to a battery in their VS. Even today, some people don't even fully grasp that a VS is a computer (based on reading years of messages posted to forums like this one). Some people don't want to be bothered with anything slightly technical and thus avoid learning their machines in depth. Roland barely acknowledges the existence and the need to change out an internal battery - let alone describe what it is being used for. Some people just want reassurance that what they're about to do will not cause some damage to a system they do not have any technical knowledge about.

We're here to assist, mainly. What's wrong with offering the help when requested?

I for one appreciate the patient responses here. Some of us have not been on the Rolands that long, and at times need some tutelage from the experienced users. I for one have found great advice here while learning my 2480.

Edit: And a big thanks to Uptildawn. He's always there to give advice, and guidance.

There are a lot of great folks here who help share their knowledge kindly to others who are looking for help or information.

uptildawn is always helping someone, all over this place. Thanks for all you do around here to help others.

Being smug and snarky to someone looking for information doesn't really help anyone, and just makes you look like a jerk.

So...thanks to all of you helpful guys. You are the best!

Whatís the avg lifespan of said battery? And what happens if the battery croaks in the unit before you change it? Can you just run jumper cables from your car to boot it back up?

I have not changed the battery since I purchased the unit new about 10 years ago and Iíve wondered recently if itís about to fizzle out. Eh?

Thx!

I may be an exception to the rule - maybe because I'm not using the 1680 every day as I once did - but I have yet to change the battery since purchasing mine new in either the late 90's or early 2000's (I've had two at once and not sure which I kept).
I'm sure it wouldn't hurt for me to consider changing mine, now that I've talked about it. \:\)

I will defer to dk for info on what exactly is stored via the internal battery. He said earlier in this thread:

"The VS battery maintains date/time on the machine. Not all units have them, for example, the VS-880 has none.

I looked at the VS-2480CD manual today. In Chapter 29, on pages 382 thru 384, you'll find the information on the battery.

It is a lithium cell, #CR-2032, and is located under effects card "A" in the compartment on the machine's bottom.

Per the manual, it controls the time, date, and certain "parameter values."

These "parameters" are not specified, but probably relate to settings you might program in, but that are not stored on the hard drive.

Most lithium batteries have a shelf life of 10 years. Actual useful life is probably 8 to 9 years in our VS machines.

I believe the cells should be changed out after 8 years, due to the possibility of the seals in the battery leaking as it ages.

You might get even more time out of the battery, but for the few dollars it costs to change it, I would say change it earlier than later. My own lasted about 8 years, mostly while in storage, and my machines were not new when purchased.

Just curious, not passing judgement, is it too much for people to look in the manual themselves first???

Yeah, so I read up on the battery change in the manual and as starliner notes above it requires removing one of the FX cards.

I donít want to be accused of asking a stupid question ;\) but I have no shame so here goes:

Since the FX card needs to be removed, will that require any reinstalls of FX currently loaded on that card? I have no idea if we have an 8f2 or 8f3 in that slot. Just looking to plan ahead in case I need to do the reinstall boogie!

Thx!

It shouldn't make any difference with the 8f2 card(s) - I don't know about the 3 card(s). One thing that might make a big difference, if there are 8f3 cards - I think you want to be sure and put them back in the same slot they are removed from.

Maybe somebody else will chime in on the real skinny for the 8f3 cards - that's the potential real bugger.

No. The data for the fx cards is not dependent on the battery.

I've changed my battery in my two machines, and moved both -2 and -3 cards around, being mindful about putting my -3 card with authorized programs back in the Key position on each machine.

One thing I did do was make labels with the serial numbers of each card, and put them on the bottom of each machine, so I would know which position to re-install them in if /when they are removed again.

Of course, the VS was always powered off when moving cards.

Never detected any problem.
