The VSR-880 is pretty simple to use. But being legally blind, I have trouble figuring out simple things. And I don't speak Rolandese so the manual is frustrating.

Right now I'm having not getting anything from the headphone output and I am not sure how to get in the proper "condition" or if that's the problem. I've never had problems navigating on my 890 but the VSR-880 is problematic.

Issues:

1) Not being able to monitor through the headphones.
2) When I pick an effect, it doesn't "take" and reverts to the stereo comp.

Although the machine is old, I don't think it's an internal problem. I'm sure this is my fault.

Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.

I should add that the SR-880 isn't my main recorder; but I am trying to set it up for recording hardware synths synced to my PC.

Normally I post here looking for help myself, but I have a pretty good idea where your issue lies. I have no idea as to the extent of your ability to read the front panel with your vision issues, but I’ll try my best.
You should check your settings in the master block:
Press “level/balance” then use the “time/value” dial and scroll over until you see e”effect send” in the display. That should be set to “100” (all the way up) if it’s set at zero or something your effects won’t be heard. There should be a setting for both effect 1 and effect 2.
Then scroll down a little further using the same method and check the headphone output setting. If it’s not set to MST the headphone jack will not be turned on.
Hope this helps. I assume that you already have the effects turned on in your track mixers, that would be the first thing I would check.
Hopefully you get a reply from uptildawn at some point. That guy taught me a ton about this recorder and could help you immensely more if these ideas don’t help.

I haven't taken a stab at this one, only because I have the vaguest memory of a similar issue one time years ago and my solution was just pure chance - nothing I could recall enough to even hazard a reply. Thanks for the kudos, though! I hope Slabraton has gotten it worked out by now, actually. It's tough enough with the lcd screen on the 1680, let alone the little display on the VSR to figure out what's going on - phew!
