My newest version of the latin jazz band called MEDIA NOCHE, live at Paprika last night. I'm on timbales during the intro, with Victor Monterrubio playing djembe (blocking me from the camera during the intro) who then moves to timbales when I go to the piano; Mario Torres on congas, Ruben Olvera on bass. The song is Cata by Andrew Hill.

This is about what we sound like but if you saw us live, I suspect it would be more powerful. Love the singing chorus the guys do behind my piano solo.

Geez. The Sam Miguel tourist board should have this on their website. Awesome.

Cool video. Around 1:58 it started to make sense to me, and then I realized it was a camera running to capture some groovy musical moments. It sounded like you guys were having fun.

Well, it starts with the three percussionists each taking a short solo, then the next until we start jamming together. That's the intro, then the song happens.

its really nice. Great percussion playing all around. One of those performances where being there is 3x better than trying to capture it on a one angle camcorder.

"What isn't?"

Mostly true, being there is always better to a degree.

What might be less than "3x better"? A higher quality looking video, better audio and not three minutes of a guy's backside. That's not taking away from the material or performance or factoring in how it was captured. All of us who do these kinds of things have the memory of knowing what it felt like in the room (or were in attendance) therefore having an enthusiasm for what we post that cannot be experienced by viewers. Is that not also true?

Of course, you're right, Kelly--I thought about chopping off the percussion intro as I can hear my left wrist lagging behind a little and of course Victor's back isn't that pleasing. For me, the really good stuff is when I'm at the piano but I just grabbed it and posted it. I am going to do shoot some better video finally in Mexico City for my next recording session, though.

Moon, you're right--it's actually an open courtyard with tons of plants and stone walls. Very nice place, though the food and service are major complaints. It's a testament to how popular this group is right now that we sell out (about 85 seats) every time we play, because it's way down on the list of 'favorite restaurants in town.'

Interesting as in, I liked it, and it's an unusual introduction .

Gracias, all. And yes, I can see that being there was more than half the fun but I'm a sharer by nature anyway. Especially when I've got video of a piano solo, 90% of which I genuinely like. \:\)
