The stop button on my 2480 has stopped working, and while it's not the end of the world since I can use mouse or keyboard, it's pretty irritating when moving fast. Does anyone have any advice on cleaning/fixing?

Hi,this isn't very technical but it worked for me.Press the stop button quickly many times and blow warm air from your mouth onto the stop button while you are pressing it.Good luck.

Thanks. Gonna give it a try. I thought about blowing some canned air in, but want to be careful not to damage any of the other transport controls. Also considered using electrical contact cleaner, but am again a little leery to try it.

get some deoxit-5 and clean the board, you might be able to shoot it down around the button, or you might have to remove the cover to gain full access.

Have you or anyone tried the "fader lube." I ask because Amazon has a bundle deal of both the deoxit and the lube. Have never lubed my faders.
Thanks for the info.

I've never opened mine, but plan on keeping it and thought it might not be a bad idea to really clean it well. My only thing is, is that I've got 5 really important songs that my band is still working on, and am terrified that opening it might do something to the machine itself, or possibly lose the recordings.
I know it's a tad silly, but am just a little skeeered to open it up.

back up your stuff first, i didn't have to take my machine apart, just sprayed around the button and let it seep down then i pressed the hell out of the button, let it dry turned on machine. button works like a charm now. never tried fader lube, if i was gonna use it, i would definitely cover up the machine to see what i was doing.

Just a quick chime in about FADERS.
Don't ever use lube-type sprays or ones that leave deposits.
The faders are a digital, variable positioning switch, and need to stay free from oily, juicy stuff. A much different design than many other faders.

. . Falcon Thanks for the info. After reading your post I admit that I'm a little concerned about using Deoxit itself on the faders. I read up on it and it states that there is some lubrication with it (aside from Deoxit lube). Have you ever used it to clean your faders, and if not, how have you cleaned them in the past? I just want to clean them up while servicing my 2480.

I thought your post was related to a frozen "stop" button. smh It was, but have decided to clean the entire console. She isn't very young and could probably use it. Not to mention that I have two faders that are a tad jittery.

Hello, can somebody tell me how to remove the top cover of the VS2480 ? My STOP BUTTON was not working correctly so I sprayed a tiny tiny dab of De-Oxit 5 in and around the button itself, but now the STOP button won't work at all...I can't stop the 2480 now without unplugging it, which we all know isn'y the best way to shut it down.
Please help...I was thinking maybe I need to remove the top cover to do a better cleaning or maybe remove some kind of crud that maybe lodged into the switch ???
Peace & Kindness to all

HI Guys & Gals, well I'm diving into taking the cover off of my VS2480 to find out why my STOP BUTTON won't work ? I sprayed a tiny tiny blast of DEoxit in and around the button and then used a hair dryer on the cool setting to help dry things up a bit, but now the button doesn't work at all at stopping the machine.
I did what I've always dreaded doing at that was just reaching back and hitting the power switch.
I'm desperate folks...I have a huge chance of a life time with some of my tunes that are now trapped in the VS2480. Thank God I backed up several more, but being in a hurry I hadn't backed up the last 2 tunes that were almost complete.
Hope to hear from somebody soon, Peace & Kindness, Charles

and just like that, out of the fog came a solution that left the masses bewildered, asking, why didn't i think of that.

Hope to hear from somebody soon, Peace & Kindness, Charles Do you have a mouse or keyboard connected to your 2480? Very simple to stop (as C Jo mentioned) via the space bar on your keyboard. You can also stop the 2480 via mouse using the onscreen transport controls toward the top of your "home" page.
Edit: You can control virtually every aspect of the 2480 via a mouse.

Hello and thank you for the info. I went searching for a keyboard today but all I could find was the ones with the USB connector, not the PS2 round barrel type that the 2480 requires.
Also here is a quick and maybe helpful update on my trials with the 2480:
I proceeded to disassemble the unit in order to get to the "R-Panel" board that contains all of the transport switches and buttons. This job is wicked and will test the hell out of anybody who hasn't performed any task even close to this.
When I got the back off, I was literally shocked by the amount of dust that was in every corner of the machine, which is hard to believe since that are no windows in my studio and the unit has never been taken out of the house, a very very clean kept house
That being said after I removed all of the dust, I proceeded cautiously making sure all of the screws were marked for the correct replacement, also very important.
Finally arriving at the R-Board and removing it to have closer look, I can tell you now that squirting a little Deoxit in and around the stop button or any other button is a total waste of time !
In order to actually get some Deoxit into an area of the buttons, the R Board must be removed and turned upside down where you can position the small red plastic nozzle close to the underside of the button and give it a squirt.
So I proceeded to spray a small amount of Deoxit into the STOP & REWIND button's underside, but this did not solve the problem.
Before I reassembled the unit, I used a loop to check for cold solder joints on these switches and sure enough both of the buttons/switches had cracked solder joints. I repaired the solder connections and reassembled the unit.
Conclusion: The repairs and the cleaning did not solve my issue. Both the STOP & REWIND buttons will not function at all, dead !
Yes I realize the 2480 with a mouse can be operated to full potential, but it's more time consuming and cumbersome especially with the big bulky keyboard.
So I found an outfit selling used VS2480 parts on e-BAY and I purchased a used R-Board. I will once again disassemble my 2480 and install the used board, hopefully this will do the trick. If not I will be parting out the unit.
Here's the sad note...I was trying to make a deadline and became frustrated with STOP Button not working correctly so I reached for the Deoxit and sprayed it in and around the STOP button as I mentioned earlier, but the thing that I didn't say was that I failed to shut the unit down before spraying the Deoxit into the machine. There is no real proof that by me not powering down the unit I may have caused more harm, Deoxit says that it's probably a good idea to power the unit off before using the product.
Yes I'm embarrassed that I forgot to power down and waiting to make sure the Deoxit had time to dry, but we all make mistakes, only this one will be costly and puts me further behind on this project than I ever dreamed of being.
Happy Holidays to everyone, Charles

Any pawn shop should do the trick. Those keyboards aren't hard to find. There are also adaptors the will work on a USB connection.

True, but your really not spending much time with the mouse if it's just transport controls that are out. Really, you don't need the mouse if you get the keyboard setup. My stop button hasn't worked for a while and I'm finding it not to be a big deal where speed is concerned, especially seeing that I can operate 99 percent of the 2480.
Keep us posted on your venture.

Thank You for helping me. I ordered an HP (Hewlitt Packard) PS2 keyboard today, I hope it works ? According to what I was told, a PS2 keyboard is a PS2 keyboard, the PS2 interface is all the same.
BTW: the STOP & REWIND switches and their buttons are still available, but one must go through a place that sells the parts since Roland will not sell you anything. Funny however that they have no problem selling a consumer a $4K recorder but won't sell you a $5.00 STOP switch. Corporate bullshit in it's finest !
