My VS2480 locks up when I try to load a song

Hi everyone. Been a while since I was on VS Planet. Heck, been a while since I turned on my 2480(life is busy, but that's no excuse!). Anyway, I could really use some input.. I turned on the VS yesterday and it booted up fine, loaded the song I last worked on. I listened for awhile, made a few changes, saved, then decided to load another song. It went into the loading process, then proceeded to stay on "Now working please wait" indefinately. I did a hard shutdown(really no other choice). I restarted and it went back to the same song. I tried again to load another song, no luck. Did this several times. I assume it's the hard drive, but I wondered if it was just that partition? (it's the original 80gighd). After a few more freeze-ups I managed to get to another partition. I recorded a couple quick guitar parts, then tried to see if it would let me load from one song to the next. Sometimes it did/but most times not. Does this sound like it is in fact the hard drive & I need to get another(it is 16 years old)? When I have it on that initial song of mine, all the functions, work fine. It's when I attempt to load another song or go to a different partition that it freezes up. Luckily, I have somehow been able to back-up some of the other songs to my internal cd drive by selecting song and back-up. Please let me know what you think. I appreciate the help. Thanks! Rob

Do you have anything hooked up to the 2480 externally via the SCSI port? (like a song vault or additional disc drive?)

wjgypsy, No. There isn't anything hooked up externally, aside from my mouse, monitor, keyboard. Thanks, Rob

Yes, it's your hard drive. Back up as many songs as you can and replace it.

I bought a new hard drive (Seagate 160g). Pulled the old 80g. I installed everything carefully/properly. Went through the format process. Everything looked good. Recovered my first song from cd, no problem. Then I tried to recover songs from another cd. Went to "now working, please wait" and stayed there. I finally hit exit, then it asked if I wanted to abort.
I said yes. Then it stayed on that forever. I did a hard shut down, restart. It went back to first song I loaded. Tried again to recover another song. No luck. I hard shut down again. restarted. Tried again, stayed on please wait. It recognizes the new hard drive. Everything works properly if I am working on that one song. But if I attempt to go to another song, recover/etc., it freezes.

Just for the heck of it - a couple of things come to mind to try out...
1- try running drive check to see if it finds and wants to repair anything - if so, then let it.
2- try wiping the hard drive again, don't set physical format or scan..... just a quick reinitialize/format the drive and partitions. Then try loading some other song first - something other than the one that loaded fine by itself. Do you have more than two to load?..... try a third one first (as opposed to the first that loaded and the second that would not).
Does any of that, or something along those lines help any?
Do you have VirDis, or know anybody near you that has it, or another burner you can try?.... Those would be other options I'd look at to troubleshoot the issue.

I tried the drive check but it locks up when I do.
Also tried the re-format process, locked up again.
(locked up, meaning it indicates that it's in the process of doing something/task/etc., but it will stay that way indefinitely)
I will try the reformat process again. If that works, I will attempt to load another song other than that first one.
Don't have access to another burner, unless I buy another.

wish I knew what else to suggest... do you have anything external hooked up to the scsi port? If so, you could try unhooking it for the test. If you need the device hooked up (like an external hd), then maybe the problem can be isolated to that point.
Which model 2480?..... HD, CD, DVD, modded?

Nothing external is connected. I have the vs2480 cd model (manuf. 2004). everything internally is original (well, except for the new hd I installed). Since it's doing the same thing as it did with the other hd, I can't help but think there is something else going on with the unit than the hard drive.

I would agree with your assessment..... It doesn't even sound like an issue, necessarily, with the CD drive (though that's probably one of the most common VS problems over time).

Update.. I thought back to what uptildawn suggested to reformat, then try another song other than that same one. I reformatted, then loaded a few other songs to the new drive. Everything worked well. Was able to jump from song/song normally. No lock-ups. Even loaded songs to other partitions, no problem. I then decided to load that original song I last used on the old HD (from a back-up cd). It loaded, I played it/worked fine. But when I attempted to move to another song, the VS locked-up. I shut it down, tried a few more times, no luck. I then erased the song from the HD. After that all the other songs work fine/were accessible. The weird part is, on that song, when I go to the FX dropdown area, FX 4 is faded out. If I click on it, a window comes up "Effect processors are occupied!" with a purple X. Crazy because I hadn't even used fx 4 for that song. This FX 4 issue isn't happening on any other song. Anyway, I reformated the HD, loaded my other songs back on the HD (just not that one song). I ran it for a few hours jumping from project to project and it works great. It's as though that song itself corrupts the system somehow. I didn't think that was possible. Anyway, THANKS to uptildawn for the suggestion to load other songs instead. I still don't quite know how that happened but I'm not looking a gift-horse in the mouth at this time. If anyone has ever experienced this crazy glitch, please share (sorry for long winded entry..)

I think you said that you couldn't even run drive check with that song on the hd, is that right? If you load it back onto the old hd by itself, maybe you can mess with trying drive check...
Or, maybe load that song onto the old hd, then copy it to another partition right away, before even playing it (just let it load). If it will copy to another partition, then erase the original load (you should still be on that same partition, if you don't try to check the copy). See if you can then run drive check, without ever having ventured onto the other partition to check the copy..... trying to fool the machine into a sense of lull - nothing special going on, ya know.... go back to sleep.... rest and let Dr. drive check look you over.....

I would think having backed up the song to a cdr then restoring it onto a new hard drive it would not have taken any crazy issues with it. But apparently it had. I see what you're saying about fooling the HD to do a drive check. At this point I'm just happy the machine is working. Since I have a brand new HD installed, I'm going to leave it for now (too much VS drama this week). At some point when I want to work on that song, I may put the old hard drive back in and work on that one song only (though I might try your idea of copying it to another partition). Finish it, mix it down, and be done with it. Anyway, bizarre issue.. Thanks again.

I recommend using the VSWE (VS Wav Export) to try and pull your wav files out of your project in a PC. If you're successful, you can then export them to a CD Data disc and start a new project to import them into.
