Is this a software or a hardware problem would you know? It's really hit'n'miss as to whether it's going to work - there's no pattern to it. If it's not working (as in: the CD drive isn't even being recognised by OS) then, sometimes, if I re-boot the VS2480, what? 2? 3? 7? times I can get it to recognise drive and it all works fine but, on next session power up (say: the following day), more often than not it's not working again. And so it goes on ... Anyone ever experienced anything similar? (Intermittent faults are just the worst!)

being recognized and not - intermittent like that - would make me want to take the 2480 apart to check cables and connections. If it had more to do with failed writes and reloads, I'd suspect more that the burner is failing, or the discs of choice are suspect.

Taking the 2480 is no simple feat, however, as you will discover if you find some threads/posts from those who have done so. If you do take it apart, be very service tech minded - keep things very organized, especially screws and types of screws (there's a bunch) and be very careful to not screw something else up in the process of checking the burner. Don't take it apart or put it back together with it plugged in! In fact, unless you are very tech oriented to begin with, don't power it up when it is apart either!!

I did some 'wiggling' under the hood as it were (re-seated SCSI connections). The CD drive is now recognised and I can export tracks to CD-R. What I can't seem to do though is BACK UP a song project.

It goes through the motions (I can hear the disc spinning and I see a progress bar) but, just as it gets to the end of the bar, it spits the disc out and there's NOTHING on it - NO file(s).

Like I say, it's burning Tracks as .WAV files no bother now but I just can't seem to back up a project (so I can use the 'VS Wave Export' programme to extract = FAR quicker than burn individual .WAV files I'd imagine!) = WEIRD! You'd think it would just work of it wouldn't. I can't fathom this!
