Swapped out my intermittent UJ-850 drive. I can now 'Track Export' .wav files without issue but ... I still can't back up a song project!

It goes through the motions. I can hear the disc being burnt and it get right to the end of the progress bar and appears to have backed up succesfully but when I transfer my disc to my laptop it see '0 files' - the disc is empty.

I'm running the latest OS and everything else appears to be working as it should.

Any ideas??

What are you using to "see" the files on your laptop?
Windows won't see anything, except a full disc.

Song backups are strictly a Roland proprietary format. Only a couple of pc tools I know of that can read a backup disc - and they are pc only -

1- VS Wave Export (VSWE)
2- the Reaper .dll
3- VirDIS

If you're not using one of these three tools on the pc, you will not be able to retrieve anything from the VS backup discs.

If you're not already familiar with any of these, there's a VirDIS forum here on the Planet that can be helpful and you can write to the developer, himself, to get detailed info - http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=72&page=1

You might check the good library dot com - http://www.thegoodlibrary.com/VSWaveExport.php - for downloading the free VSWE, although there's a version 2.5 possibly still available from one of the guys here at the Planet - You will have to do a search or two to find him. I don't recall right now, who it is, or if he's still hosting the download. There are often other issues people experience getting this great too up and running, especially with newer windows os.

As for the Reaper .dll, first you need the Reaper daw - found easily with a google search. Then you need to find this .dll file that you install into Reaper's effects folder. This can allow you to open a VS SONG or project file directly into Reaper, which populates its main window with all the tracks in your Song. You can then either work on them within Reaper, or render/export them to the file type of your choice (wav or mp3), individually, or as a mixed stereo track, or even different stems (If I recall correctly - it's been ages since I messed with that).

Hi uptildawn and thanks for the response!

After much hunting about in my attic I found an old PC running XP and 'stole' the missing 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' file to get 'VS Wave Export' working on my Windows 10 laptop.

I connected my IDE HD (while I had the VS2480 open) to my laptop via a SATA>USB connector and it read the HD. From here I was able to open a song file and convert the tracks to .wav format using the 'VS Wave Export' software ... so I know that works!

This isn't a practical solution once I'd re-assemble and I was just hoping (after fitting a NOS CD/DVD drive that I would be able to do song back up out to disc (CD-R/CD-RW/DVD even).

What's happening though is that the disc gets burnt and I get right to the end of the progress bar (I've tried this 5 times now) ... but it spits the disc out and I don't get the 'Done!' message.

When I put the burnt backup disc into my laptop CD drive it sees 'O files' and when I go to the 'Extras' drop down in 'VS Wave Export' and try to use the bundled Roland2CD Ripper I get an error message saying it doesn't see the path.

My workaround now is to use 'Track Export' and burn .wav files that way but it would have been good (and quicker no doubt!) to have the option to back up my song projects.

Like I say, everything else I've tested seems to be working fine. It's a very nice example with very little mileage on the clock from the looks of it.

Just a shame I can't crack this back up thing!

Thanks again for your help here

Although I can't imagine how the 2480 can cheerfully use a burner to export .wav files to, but won't do a backup disc, I'd probably go with keeppracticing's suggestion, if you don't already have that particular Panasonic UJ-870 drive. The VS series is very picky.
