Here's the most recent discussion I recall, or can find with a quick search of the 2480 forum using the keyword convert - http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbth...rue#Post1564599
The last post in this thread gives the link to a video that shows the adapter and method of install used.
As with most all of the drive mods I've read about or tried myself (with the 1680 in my case), the VS has proved to be very finicky about which adapters it likes and doesn't like. Notice in the thread I link to, there was a lot of confusion and frustration over making the mod work successfully with anything other than the exact converter card used in the video.

Don't give up. The drive isn't formatted yet and since the drive size is larger than the original IDE drive, it wants to partition it. I've heard 11 gig partitions are the best. There's a YouTube on this procedure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzcVpveEhuY
Let me know how that works for you. I haven't retrofitted mine yet. I don't have the conversion card yet plus I've only opened my case to put in VS8F-2 cards. P.S. I use a PreSonus V-Fire interface as well. Cheers, Darrell

Hi,
I used converter : https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/cUWm1om4 with Samsung 120G SSD. After formatting (you must do this step!) i have 10x 11.5 Gb + 1x 5 Gb disks available.

I hope you got it to work. Between the SSD and the quieter fan my vs is so much quieter in my studio and I have no worries about mechanical breakdowns with the old school spinning HD. Cheers, Ian

Wow, this is great. Thanks for this info. And to the rest of you in this thread. May i ask what fan you put in your 2480 ? I heard Noctua is the best for silence. What size is is? Standard 8cm ?
Thanks !

I just installed a JP103-5 adapter with a Samsung 860 PRO 256GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76P256BW). The VS2480 recognized the hard drive and is in the process of formatting it now. Hopefully it is successful!

Does anyone have an idea of how long it takes to format without physical or surface scan (i.e., quick format)? Mine started with an inch of progress, but has been going for about three hours and hasn't shown any more progress. I remember formatting drives taking forever, but It's been so long that I don't remember what "forever" might actually be.

I'm up to 9 hours of formatting, and the bar hasn't moved at all. Any ideas? Also, canfire's videos talk about the master/s;ave jumper, but doesn't actually say which is which. I have the slave prong exposed, and the clip over the master. Is this correct?

don't know what to tell you about the master/slave setting - you might look it up on the manufacturer's website.
As for the formatting, I'd power down and then turn the machine back on after a few seconds to see if maybe it's actually been formatted. If it's not, you will certainly be able to tell.
Maybe the drive is too big.... just a guess. technology could be too new on the drive or the adapter, or whatever...... who knows why with the VS recorder?

Hi, MASTER. The setting needs to be on MASTER. If you look closely at the chip it tells you how to set it to master or slave. The jumper has to be to the side that says what it is on the chip shown in my video. I can't speak for all chips because the configuration may be different.
Furthermore, when it comes to IDE you will always be setting the drive to Master. The only time Slave will be used is if there is an additional drive used in series. There are videos and webpages dedicated to IDE master, slave devices in computers, so I need not explain here. SATA is different.
So THEORETICALLY, (I have not tried this) if you have a VS2480 CD and you want to have the SSD SATA you might have problems because of the jumper settings and where peripherals are in the chain.
Now, I have done a successful conversion, IDE to SATA, with a VS2000 CD and the adapter chip was set to master. So it is truly baffling that so many people are having troubles. Maybe it is the case where the VS2000CD and the VS2480CD are that much different, since the VS2000cd was the newer product. (Though I doubt it) HOwever I have never been inside the VS2480CD or DVD. SCSI and IDE were simple back in the day. You could have all sorts of other storage gadgets as SLAVE and the device ID number was important.
I am not a computer whiz. So if I am wrong I look forward to hearing the correction. Cheers, Ian

Thanks for the input! I'm using the exact same adapter you have in the video. I just wasn't sure if I had the plastic thing (I think that would be the jumper) on the correct metal peg. In other words, the peg exposed is on the slave side, and the jumper is on the master side. It sounds like I have that set correctly, and it is set in the same position as the one in your video.
I'm also using the same drive you recommended. Do you remember how long it took to format?
I just started formatting again. I bought three of the adapters, so if it hangs again, I will try one of the others. Thanks again for the response, and for figuring out what works in the first place! I'm really excited about this conversion!

After watching canefire's video again, I realize I did not turn on "physical format". Hopefully that is the problem!

How long??? It started at 12pm PST yesterday. Now it's 8.15am, and the bar hasn't moved.
I'm going to order a different drive (I'm using a Samsung 256mb). Someone mentioned an Intel 120GB drive in another thread. Anyone else had success getting the 2480 to format a specific brand of SSD?

Personally, I wouldn't turn on physical format, or anything else, other than to partition it - unless there was a very specific reason to need to do the other options.
Can't help ya with drive selection, sorry.

I don't think a VS can address a drive larger than 128 or maybe it's 160. I don't know whether or not the formatting fails above those limits.

While I've never tried using an SSD, I do know that the 2480 doesn't allow any drive larger than a 160 gig. There are a few I've read that have succeeded in using an SSD, but can't remember where I read it. I would get the 160 and give that a shot.
Edit: Meant the 2480 won't accept anything large than 120 gig drive, not 160...

Thanks powermac! I had seen the first video, but not the second. He states he did a quick format and it only took 5 mins. I'm guessing either a) it's because I used a 256mb drive, or b) I'm using a HD model, which maybe is more finicky compared to later models.
Either way, I have a 120mb Kingston drive being delivered tonight. I'll update all on whether it works or not. If nothing else, at least I have the corn-venience of the SCSI to SD backup.

The 120GB Kingston drive doesn't work. The machine didn't even recognize a drive. I'm going to try a 120GB Samsung drive tomorrow. I'll post the part numbers of the drives that work/don't work in case anyone wants to try them on their machine.

It didn't work, unfortunately. The machine recognized the samsung drive, but it wouldn't format. However, I ordered an older samsung drive with the same part number as the one in canefire's video (not the one with the kingston drive). It should be here Saturday. I'll let you know whether or not it works. *fingers crossed*

I would like to hear how it comes out as well. If it works, I may try it after I finish the album I'm working on. I've already got a 120 gig, but would love to make the hop to an SSD.

I received the drive that matches the Samsung in canefire's video. The drive was recognized, but unfortunately it didn't format. It was a refurbished drive, so maybe that has something to do with it. Or maybe both of my 2480s are picky twats. Who knows? Either way, after four different drives, I'm all out of ideas.

Is there no way to partition (11 GB max, correct ?) & format this before on a PC and then stick it in the VS?

No, unfortunately the drive must be formatted/partitioned by the VS.
