I have just tried sending my mixed tracks to burn on a cd. I'm a newbie and have not gone beyond recording my tracks before, so this was really a shot in the dark to see what happens.I have only equalised the tracks, I haven't used compression etc as I don't know how to,I just followed Franks instruction "burning a cd" the end result was that I did manage to burn the tracks to cd but they were not loud enough. I have a feeling I'm going to be told to use compression but like I said I don't know how to,and if that is the case then I would really welcome some guidance on the subject by way of a very easy to follow step by step tutorial. The general category of what you're looking to get a handle on is called dynamics processing - compression, limiting, normalization, (even eq in combination with the others) will fall under this umbrella.

As one very talented video producer has put it - don't assume that you have to use compression on every single track -
Here's a few well-explained tutorials on how and when a person may want to use compression. Understand that there a an endless variety of needs and decisions about using compression, so the best most of us can offer are extremely generalized suggestions. These videos, although using pc/mac compression plugins for demonstration (which clearly have a visual aspect advantage that most of us VS users can't use - we have to use our ears, mostly), still provide very good basic knowledge that applies to all audio compressors and the general purposes we use compression for. I hope this is helpful. It takes a lot of experimenting to, over time, learn how your particular music recordings and your personal preferences command how and when you will use compression.

normalization is another major factor in raising overall volume to whatever maximum level you wish to end up with.... try this video for starters:

You also need to learn just how much your eq settings can and do affect your overall output volume, especially as it is used to shape how compression, limiting and normalization act on the tracks you put through these processes. Pay special attention to what these people have to suggest about eq - and your placement of instruments in the mix, as well.
There are excellent videos galore on just how, when, why we use these processors. You can become overwhelmed easily, but if you do, take deep breaths, zero in on one or two concepts at a time and the experiment in your VS as much as possible. Learn to understand and relate the differences between the plugins used in tutorials and the effects processor settings you have in the VS. Most all of the settings are there, if not labeled the same and the basic concepts are absolutely the same, regardless of the visible and physical differences in presentation of the device.
Don't be surprised if this takes months and years to get a handle on - but you should be able to make big leaps in your mix quality rather quickly, by following and becoming accustomed to the basic concepts.

I can see there's a lot to learn, which comes as no surprise,but you've given me a starting place and a lot to go at so it looks like I shall be hibernating for the foreseeable future . I'm always more than happy, if I can be helpful. Compression is definitely one of those tools I shied away from understanding for a long time.

If your levels are low on your songs then lower your "listening level" and raise your track levels when you mix but make sure there is no clipping.Find a good listening reference level that works and mark it.Using a bus compressor and a limiter on the master buss helps .
