I recorded some lead parts on a tune I'm working on for a friend of mine, and you know, I let the finish ring out. And that was fine for like the first measure, but then the chords changed, and so there was a little bit of a clash there, between the chord I played that was sustaining, and the chord in bar 3 and 4.
So this is something I love: I could just fade out the file. I didn't need to do an envelope, I didn't need to do anything except drag this little tool from the corner and it ... fades out and sounds natural and presto, no more clash.
Can you imagine what George Martin or the Beatles would have done with technology that makes it so easy to do things?
I know, it's small and stupid, but what a great thing. It took less than a second and a problem was solved.

Yes, gotta love simple things that solve problems....I record band rehearsals on the ZOOM H2 and I love that I can dump 2 hours of contiuous audio and easily snip into 15-20 songs, and send out mp3s to the guys in like 15 minutes of work...
You guys and the Beatles though
I dont know how much more creative they would be

I was thinking about that the other day.... Less from an engineering standpoint this time (although +1 Fer shure).... Computer affect on performances.
I'm lead alto in a big band doing a gershwin concert, challenging. Turns out most of the charts have been performed and posted on YouTube. So I blast the bigband thru the studio PA (alternatives to the mixing monitors) and run the charts in real-time with Gordon Goodwins or Sammy nesticos bands.
Not to mention solo analysis....
Yep, remarkable.

Agreed flat....i think my lack of using much automation in mixes....or as Reaper has chosen to pull from its ass “envelopes”....is related to what i call “top&tailing” everything as soon as its tracked. When Im given something to mix, I use my time in doing that to double as the “getting to know all the tracks” period—at the end, it sounds like Id tracked it—without leading and trailing (and sometimes in betweem) noise. The ability to alter the fade envelope to gracfully and most transparently fade away in the context of what else it going on....is important. I cant telll you how many mixes I had to redo after scrutinizing and finding the gates cut this or that off.

I love the quick grab fades, in and out. It’s made things enjoyable and possible. At home it’s all the attributes posted about. I don’t automate a mix any more. It’s cuts and clip gains. I love how quickly I can “help” a compressor by doing some of the work at the clip level. At work the ability to make a quick cut and fix a piece has been my workflow every week. Rendering EQ and noise reduction at the clip level has also been invaluable. Got hum, bleed, cough, sustained bgv, hard attack consonants? Easy peasy fix.
We just tracked some live songs in my bandmate's dining room. Fridge came on. Easy downward expansion dropping a couple dB on open mics.
