Mastering an album for a client on VS2480CD...Most everything recorded and mixed around -12Db...The bass (Fender American Deluxe Jazz) was recorded plugged directly into the hi-z input on channel 1 with no effects.

Masters sound superb in monitors (DS-90A), through stereo speakers (JBL 2800), through Sony boombox, and headphones...

Test master taken to vehicles' systems...and...

Overwhelming BASS.

Does anyone know where I'm going wrong?

Or why it sounds great everywhere...but car audio?

Thank-You,
JMT

Depends a lot on the vehicle's system configuration and eq settings. What was once an average stock car system would have hyped bass as a default tone shape and/or people have a tendency to pump up the bass because it escapes the interior walls of a vehicle rather easily and more so than other frequencies. Sub woofer systems will be especially overwhelming if hyped for bass-heavy beat music.

Try to set the system flat, or even pull out a couple notches of bass - compare your mix, then, to a similar commercial recording.

What mastering plugin on the VS did you use? "Rock Band"?

Is it just your CD that sound bassy in the car or do other commercially produced CDs sound bassy as well?

It sounds like its an issue with the car, not your CD as from what you have said your CD sounds good on other systems.

Only thing I can think of is that the car system is responding differently to frequencies below what we wouldn't normally hear. Did you put your mix through a high pass filter as part of the mixing/mastering process, if not you could try that and filter out anything below around 20Hz as a starter.

Make sure the vehicles EQ is absolutely flat. Play other CD's, then play yours. If the others sound bassy as well, it's the vehicles system. Don't make yourself crazy. It will never sound incredible on all systems because some systems are just toxic.

HPF, as mentioned may help starting around 20hz-40hz, trying to calm the super low rumble stuff that doesn't register on other systems, yet being careful not to "gut" the low end either or get in a region that effects the upper harmonics audibly (all will effect in some way)

Multi-band compressors (setting to only attack the low, low stuff) may also be of assistance.

May take a few different tries/varying low shelf slopes Try and try again.
