Sharing to this forum: if you haven't looked at VirDis you owe it to yourself to check out this product!
I want to do a huge shout out to Bill Casey for developing VirDis for all of us... as VS users, we now have much better options than the old slow disc backups! I'm still using the VS 1680 and had been using VirDis version 3.5 very happily for a while. A few months back we licensed the latest update (I believe it is version 4.3) and although I am ham fisted with pretty much all things computer, with Bill's patient guidance we are now up and running with version 4.3...

For anybody new to the topic, VirDis allows you to backup your VS files from your VS IDE drive to your computer extremely easily. There is also a nifty WAV tool...

Some VirDis users report recording TO the VirDis HD straight away. For me, I like using the Roland IDE to record and backing up to VirDis...and then, I can send my VS files as WAV files anywhere.

Anyway, we are very fortunate in the VS community to have Bill doing development for our VS machines!

Awesome product, awesome support! Highly recommended if you are working in the VS format

Thanks Bill!

It doesn't get much better than that - and even with the limitations us 1680 users have with VirDIS...
There's no limitations with Bill Casey's dedication and helpfulness.

I can't wait for VirDis 2, due out in early 2014!

In all seriousness, I'm sure VirDis is great, especially with is direct recording capabilities. I really wish I had access to that function. It just sucks that us folks who only have space for a laptop waited years for the promised standalone version that never came.

In any case, at least us laptop users have the SCSI to SD converter, which easily accomplishes the exact task RD is doing with VirDis, for a total investment of $100.

Does Virdis work with a Macbook or just with a PC? What interface or connectors are needed for this?

Currently, VirDis is still PCI and/or PCIe card (I believe) and can be installed in a computer system that can accept one of these card types. I don't know the MacBook, but if it doesn't have a way to connect one of these types of cards to it (internally, or externally, I imagine), then it's probably a NO. Not until Bill finishes his design idea for a USB-ported version.

Just about any desktop pc on earth with windows xp and beyond will work with VirDIS without a sneeze. I imagine any apple desktop with a PCI or PCIe slot could work also, with windows installed on it (with something like Bootcamp software, I'm sure). I only know macs from the outsider viewpoint........ haven't dealt with them much.

We got an old refurbished Windows 7 desktop for maybe $100, and Bill guided our install via internet when necessary...and I've also installed Reaper on the same computer.

Because I love the Roland platform but need the connectivity (wav files etc) that VirDis and Reaper provide...

The world opens up and I still get to use my VS1680. Beautiful!

Has there been any news recently about the standalone version? I do check periodcally. I'd buy that in a flash.

As would I.

While we wait for the standalone, has anyone tried running VirDis on a PCIe desktop Mac running Windows via a virtual machine(BootCamp, Parallels, VirtualBox, etc.)?

I'd bite if it were known to work.
