I'm having some issues with mastering. I spent hours yesterday trying to use the mastering room. I was so angry when I went to bed last night I was shaking. I begum shaking when I woke up this morning too! I don't handle failure well.

So I finally got a mix of a song to tracks 23-24v16 in mastering mode. The problem is there is no way to add a mastering mtk "effect" over the new mix. In the mastering room I select playback and select 1 on FX insert. However when I playback there is no FX over the mix.
No matter how many I go over the directions in both manuals and follow everything to the T it will not add mtk Ins master to the final mix.

I'm losing my mind. Literally. Can anyone help me? I've done before but now it's manically not working and I have to reformat it to ship Monday so I have to get everything on it mixed and mastered by yesterday.

Dude sounds like your wound too tight. I hope you don't own firearms. Sorry, I am no help, i've never used the Mastering Room on the 2480, but i couldn't help seeing the humor in your predicament. I am sure one of the regulars will chime in soon and assist you. In the meantime, try and remain calm. A good indica strain just might be what the doctor ordered.

This may be the angriest I've ever been. I've literally exactly was the instructions say. Why would Roland not have correct instructions? I must be missing an important step that isn't in the booklet.

I've only used MTK on final mix, not the 2-track master. I did try it on the 2 track once, but it didn't work. I know the mastering room is finicky as hell. Like some settings are permanent and can't be changed. Might be time to go to plan B, as in un-mastered tracks. In any case, sorry you're having so much trouble. Hope you feel better.

Thing is I did it will one song fine yesterday. I've gone to a different project and followed the same steps with nothing. I can't figure out what is different.

I don't use the 2480, so forgive a really possibly stupid question -
but is it possible to quickly/easily create a new project (nothing in it) and then copy/transfer just the unprocessed tracks into it from the problem session? If so, then maybe you could just avoid that project file and quick mix the new session.

I know you said you're in a jam for time.

Been going over the instructions all day and following them on every project I have with no luck.

I began to get psychotic from frustration so for safety reasons I deleted and reformatted all three hard drives.

I'll probably get a cold sore from all the stress.

There is a simple fix to your issue. First, create a stereo mixdown track(s)in the mastering room without attempting to use MTK. Now go to your project list and create a new song file. When creating the song file make sure to click the CD mode. Once the new song file is created go to "Import track." Your project list will pop up. Choose the song you want to master that was previously mixed (see above) and import it. Note: You will have to scroll down to track 23(L) and check it. It will then download the mixdown that you previously created. Now go to the mastering room and choose a master plugin and adjust to preference. Afterwards you'll do a recorded mix down just like you did with the original song file.

Will it know to import just tracks 23,24v16 and not any other track from the project?

Yes. It will initially show (after you scroll down a bit) track 23L. Don't let that scare you. Click on it and press enter. You'll then see at the top middle window both mixdown stereo tracks 23L and 24R. Press enter and the mixdown will be loaded, although depending on the amount of tracks you have may take 2 or 3 minutes. I generally have 35 plus tracks so it takes right at 3 minutes.

Remember that when you create the new project, make sure it's in "CD" mode.

I just realized that you said you were attempting to use MTK in the "final mix, not the final mix (stereo) tracks." It doesn't work that way. A master will always be done from 2 tracks. You've got to create the mixdown (Stereo) beforehand. True that you could use a master plugin for final mixdown, provided that you had an entire effects card available. Having said that, mastering is done from a final mixdown stereo track.

Edit: There isn't anything "finicky" about the mastering room in the 2480. It's actually pretty easy and solid. It may not offer certain things that the current daw programs offer, but if you know what your doing, you can get very satisfying results.

I think how and when you master depends on how you have recorded the material in the first place. I tend to use my VS as if I'm recording to tape with one song following another rather than a new project for each song. To me this has many advantages with the VS for example, once I have a good drum sound for song 1, the same settings/sound will be there for song 10. If the VS didn't take so long in loading a new project and you could easily import mixer settings between projects I may do it differently as I'm sure I will as and when I move to a computer based DAW.

So for me I always try and leave a -3 card for mastering as part of my final mix. It saves the stage of having to produce a stereo mix and then import it into another project. My stereo mix is essentially the 24 track mix being played back without the MTK effects inserted. I then have for example all 10 songs mastered in the same single project.

Now, addressing the original post I think the problem is that Bwdavis is trying to insert an effect on a 23/24-16 as mastered tracks and the VS will only let you play them back, it isn't designed for remastering mastered tracks. As long as they were not mastered in CD mode and therefore will be the same format as all the other tracks you should be able to move them to another pair of tracks and then play them back through the MTK with effects being applied. I haven't tried doing it but I can't see why it shouldn't work.

While I understand that some will record song 1 through 10 on the same project, then save an effects card to master with, it's not how 99% of masters are done. With a mixed stereo track you tend to have a sound that's more glued together. Then with mastering that stereo mix the glue get's stronger.

In the case of the 2480... I have far more freedom in production when I don't have to save a card for mastering. Especially if I choose to loop some effects. Certainly it can be pointed out that if your songs don't have a lot of track density or require somewhat large production, that you could save a card and master within the mix. Having said that, the glue is not quite the same. Additionally, by mixing the songs to a stereo track and importing them to another project, you now have 4 effects cards (provided you have 4) wide open for mastering.
