I recently upgraded from a 1680 to a 2400

They are radically different. The manual is not the most user friendly thing i have ever read.
I cant even work out how to record a basic track !!!

Does anyone know if the DVD for the 2400 Tutorial is available online? I can see eBay has them for about $50 AUD

Cheers

Watch youtube videos. It is very similar to the 2480. The complicated aspects have been placed on youtube.

Do you have a monitor and mouse? If not, I recommend you get one. Though you can do everything without a monitor.

I owned a VSR-880, VS-1880, a VS-2000, and now VS-2480. It's really not that much different from the older model you had. What are you not understanding specifically.

The book "Roland VS POWER" by SKelnik is very good.
There is dvd you can buy also which is thorough.

Cheers,
Ian

I found the user video guide for the VS2480. Your right, it does have similar setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBHlEFhmezU

I previously used the 840EX/GX, 880EX, 1680. I found them easier with the EZ routing..... But i guess once i start playing more and more with this... it will get easier

I will no doubt come back and ask heaps of questions.

the fan is pretty noisy and im looking for a solution... i cant see a switch off function like the 1680

there are two (at least) different dvd available. One is by an Australian chap and its good, but doesn't go in depth much. I'm considering buying the 2 dvd set from Plancton.

http://www.plancton.de/english1.html

en vs encyclopedia and dvd

there are a couple of samples from it on youtube:

clean the fan and oil the bearings. the fan is not normally noisy.
at least mine isn't. I took mine apart to have a look at things and also to add an external sata (e-sata) port.

normally in all computers, the fan gets loaded with dust which unbalances the blades (different amounts of dust on each blade) which causes vibration and noise. this may eventually wear out the bearings. Use several damp q-tips and a damp paper towel if necessary. its not hard.

make sure the firmware is up to date. I think its set to turn the fan off during recording and only use it the rest of the time, if I remember correctly.

ordered the book & dvd bundle - currently 79.99 usd$ today. I'll let you know what its like. I liked the example on youtube, you can find the links on the plancton website in the link I left above.

the dvd I got with my vs-2400 is allright, but doesn't go into depth much. It just basically shows how to record a track, how to setup routing, and how to set levels. Due to the age of the material its ntsc video, which is kind of blurry. I put the video on my laptop so I could watch it while I used the vs2400. This let me adjust the sharpness of the video in VLC player so I could make out the controls better.

The DVD I'm refering to has a sample on youtube at:
proaudiodvd tutorlal with the aussie dude

the tutorial I just bought is this one, its a 2 dvd set, so hopefully it will be more indepth, it certainly looks like it from this sample:

plancton's 2 dvd tutorial

its coming by airmail, I'll let you know if its more better than the 1 dvd I already have.

book is nice, its a hard back. Apparently Roland GMBH used to include it with VS2480 purchases.

The suspense is killing me!

I've had the VS2400 (actually have 2 now!) since it came out but really only use a fraction of its capabilities. I have the David Wills DVD which is great except he uses the on board display instead of a large monitor.

I even attended one of the Roland clinics in Atlanta - very cool - an entire room full of people each with their own 2480s and a few of us weirdos with our 2400s! I think I retained at least 5 or 6% of what I learned there...... sheesh.

The Plancton 2 DVD set and the book are extremely worthwhile. I try to get all the help I can with my VS 2480. While no "one" guide, or DVD, is "THE ONE", I feel the Plancton set comes the closest. The encyclopedia by itself is worthwhile. The instructor "Julius Krebs" uses the VS 2400 in his demo's. The book includes info for all three machines....2000, 2400, 2480...so you'll find things like 4 1/2 dedicated pages to things like the Rhythm computer on the 2400. He also goes into each VS8F-3 effect and goes over operation, quick set-ups, and uses.
I thought it was well worth the money.

Looks great.

Went to check out the DVDs just now and neither will load
In a DVD player or my PC. Good grief.....

Looked at the read side of the discs and they look pretty rough.
Was well packaged though.......

Emailed PlancTon.

If you want to go to the trouble of pulling off what's on those dvds yourself (since it's been months evidently and no word from Plancton), you might want to hunt up a program such as iso buster: https://www.isobuster.com/

I've used this on and off for years to recover programs I'd recorded with a Sony dvd recorder, back when it started going south. I don't know if there's a "free" alternative, but I know this one works really well.

Thanks. Would love to know if you can get it to work. Limited funds means I don’t want to pay for something that doesn’t work!

Just drug out the PlancTon DVDs. No luck.

I tried transfering the data to my hard drive - Disc 1 made it.
Disc 2 gits stuck at 73%. Tried several times.

I think I have bad discs. The read side is scratchy looking...
definately not like a new disc should look.

There were 2 folders on each disc - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
Audio_TS folders on both discs were empty.

The files (in Video_TS) are all BUP or ifo or VOB.

My BluRay Player wont see the discs at all.

Book looks great though!
All the pages are there and they turn nicely!

Its hard back and theres a VS2400 on the cover.
HOWEVER note that the book does cover 2480, 2400 & 2000.
I hate that. Hopefully wont be a problem.

If you have the David Wills DVD (and limited funds) I'd just go with it until (if ever) you feel the need for more info.

Its a shame Wills didnt use a large monitor on his DVD. To me that was one of the biggest selling points on these machines. And still no one else is doing it.

IMHO these machines even today are the best value theres ever been.
Large monitor capable.
Stand alone machine.
No stupid contracts or confusing updates to mess with.
No monthly or yearly fees.

Yeah theres disadvantages but none of them bother me.

Sorry - didn't mean to go on a rant!

Thats terrible
Can you get a refund? did you pay via paypal, as they are really good in managing disputes
would be good to get at least the money back on the DVD part..

I agree thats a bit frustrating that it have 2480 and 2000 as the layout is a little different

would love to know how much actual value you get out of it

I'm sitting in an ER waiting room - they r checkin out my father in law - lookin at the book. Thought I'd read it but its definitely more of a "reference only" book. I'll have the book handy if ever git ta recordifyin' again. Seems like when I have the time I dont have the energy or the inspiration. But I'm thinkin of musical stuff all day. Go figure.......

I think I've waited too long for a refund. I'll git one of my pc guru friends to look at the discs.....

Ah, I know exactly how the above feels all too well. I spent about 3 years always thinking of writing and recording more music but very rarely got around to it even though I mostly had plenty of time. Then all of a sudden I snapped back to more regular writing/recording. These things come in waves I guess.

PlancTon CD Long Overdue Update!

Finally got off my butt and figured this out.

VOB Files need fancy software to be read.

Did a search on how to read VOB Files - Downloaded "Free Blu-Ray Player". Can view discs now.

Looks real good. Dude starts talking in German =- English soon kicks in.

He uses a video monitor instead of the lil LCD screen that Davis Wills uses. Very basic a first but review is always goot. (Ha!)
Ill try to update as I watch.

These videos are really good (IMHO).
So far very basic but still good.
Each section of a video references the page # in the book -
Very Cool.

Side note:
Ikarian - You'll appreciate this:
I had an Opera Singer in the studio a week ago.
Nuthin' like an Opera Singer session to push one out of a non-productive funk!
No offense intended to you opera fans out there!
