I've had my 2480 since 2001, its the original model ,so I bought the Qps cd rack as well, Its been updated to use mouse keyboard and color Vga ,Ive used it alot over the years , never a problem anything like this. I have formatted the hard drive twice now and am not able to get any signal at all whether I use a guitar keyboard or mic. I thought maybe I changed a parameter somewhere, I did the param ini , nothing happening, still can't get any audio signal on any track, the only thing that shows activity is the input clip lights up when I turn the gain knob up on that channel, what am i missing, would a Bad hard drive keep all the meters from working, when starting up everything says ok , Ive tried a maxtor 40 gig HD, and a seagate 160gig HD neither one is recognized. so bottom line is am I dealing with something internal, (one of the boards) or a bad hard drive, Hopefully someone might have an answer, thanks ken

Hi Ken,
Sorry to hear you're having trouble, never any fun!
According to your post it seems as thought you have 2 problems.
First, you state you can't get any signal at all. Then, later, you mention you tried 2 different hard drives and neither one is recognized.
If neither hard drive is recognized, then what is the unit running off of???
Is your unit booting up fine, which means your hard drive is fine, and you're not getting any input signals?

If your unit boots, make sure all of your input faders are turned up, make sure none of the input channels are muted or soloed, go to the EZ route page and make sure your inputs are properly routed to your input channels.

KP

hey KP, I have the original hard drive in the machine which was an IBM desk star 30 gig, the other two HD's were ones I had laying around, I was hoping they would work, unfortunately not, according to Roland any Hard Drive except Western Digital should work on a 2480 as long as they are 120 gigs or under, Ive reset the parameters with the param ini function in the utility section, I've created a new project which resets everything in the patch bay supposedly , I'm just not sure if a bad hard drive would keep the input meters from showing an input signal coming in, I thought the 2480's operating system was in the machine not on the hard drive, so I figured you should still see a signal just not be able to record if the hard drive was bad .

Crazy thought:

Is there a switch in the settings for turning off the internal HD?

If so, could yours be OFF by mistake?

check input mixer : channel fader(s) must be up before recording

Double check to make sure your inputs are patched to channels/tracks and your input faders are up.

I believe if it was a hard drive issue it would not even fully start up.

I had an issue like this when I first got my 2480. Pulled my hair out.
Turned out to be the 'mix' button toward the right of the screen (vga).
Not exactly sure where it's located as I sold my baby 6 months ago

was it turned on or off , I've done all the suggestions , nothing yet, Ive run disk check comes back ok's across the screen, Im, pulling my hair out to, Thing is It should be simple when you start a new project, its usually point and click on in 1-16 , select channel 1 speak into working mic. slide slider to desired vol. adjust main, you should be hearing something at this point, everything moves when using mouse, its really got me stumped, the only thing that shows there's a signal from whatever channel i plug the mic. or guitar into is at the top right of the monitor about a inch down is the a channel clip block with a red clip light under each channel what ever channel I use it will blink red the higher i turn the gain knob will keep it on solid. So I know there's a signal up to the gain knob,I don't get it, sorry for carrying on !

Hi,
Just to be clear with what I have read thus far.
All of the connections in the EZ routing screen are actually connected?

I am wondering if you stated that you removed the connections.
thanks
Ian

Hi, I don't know if you've solved this problem, but I've been experiencing a similar problem (along with a crackling noise issue that seems to be a common hic). When I switch on and load a project I have no sound from any channels at all when I press play. When I observe more closely the details of a channel there would seem to be 100% gain reduction being applied, even when the dynamics are switched off. After toggling around, re-loading, or changing internal to external clock (not always the same works) the reduction disappears and the sound is back.Unfortunately the constant crackling noise is ever present on all tracks, rendering my machine completely useless ftm.

I'll give it shot, I haven't heard any constant crackling, im' not hearing anything at the moment ...lol, but I did see somewhere in this forum that Roland was doing free repairs on the circuitry (preamps) . gonna spring for a new hard drive I guess, didnt wana, kinda limited on funds especially since I have four HDs, They're not recognized by the vs2480

kdog,

Did you come to any resolution on this issue? I'm having a very similar issue with no output from any track on any project from any drive.

Hi Friend,I've been working with vs 2480 since 2001, and last year she started to come up with the same problems that you've reported, have you managed to solve this? Is your vs still working?
Thanks, Gil

Hi all, I also have the 100% gain reduction on startup. no sound in or out until g.r. goes away after that everything is fine. Is there a way to manually control gain reduction?

You mean like it takes a bit for the unit to 'warm up'?

How long?

All channels?

Sounds like an OpAmp thing. But, all channels???

How old is your 2480? HD, CD, or DVD??

Maybe the power switching section is having issues.

If it's on ALL channels and it goes away by itself, it's most likely a power switching section issue, or a component has changed value enough either IN that power switching section (or coming right out of it) to change the supply voltages feeding the boards.

Might be a bad Analog Board. Have you tried recording using the COAX digital input to bypass the A/D converter? You'll also have to change the 2480's internal clock to EXTERNAL.

Damn!

Not 100% sure what the issue may be in your case.

However, the power supply unit is part #02562889 (SWP05).

The power supply might be fine, and the condition could be caused by out of spec capacitors on the main board.

But THAT's also speculation, and NOT actually something that I've done a series of Q/A testing upon.

Sorry, that's all I've got at this time.
