Hi everyone,

I recently came across a VS880 Expanded at a local pawn shop, and quickly nabbed it. From what I've tried with it so far, I'm extremely happy with the machine. But before doing too much recording I wanted to try and convert the hard drive to an SD card drive.

After a bit of searching, I came across this post: http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1007641&fpart=1

as well as a few videos showing the process, and order a 44-pin SD-card to IDE 2.5" converter (this)

I went ahead and disconnected the hard drive from the ribbon cable, but the converter doesn't appear to fit. Is it possible that I need a different piece for the Expanded, and if so, does anyone know what it might be?

Thanks!

Just off the top of my head - looking at the amazon picture where I can see pin 1 marked and counting over to the left -
I see a tenth pin is blank, but it looks like it's not pin 10, but whatever one resides above, or below where pin ten is.

I know that it has always been said (as well as in my own experience) that pin 10 has to be removed, bent away, or not there in the first place, in order to connect to the VS.

Could this be why it doesn't appear to fit?.....

Aside from that, you don't disconnect the hard drive from the ribbon cable, you pull the hard drive and remove it from its caddy - the plastic or metal frame it is surrounded by. There will be four screws on the side that hold it to the caddy.

Once loose of the caddy, the hard drive is pulled from it and the little adapter card connected to it at the back of the caddy. The little adapter is the part that connects to the ribbon, when the caddy/hd assembly is put back in the machine.

The SD card adapter should be connected to that little adapter socket in place of the hard drive and the caddy assembly should then be reconnected to the ribbon in the same manner the hard drive would normally be connected - by sliding the caddy assembly back into the cage on its rails.

If your hard drive was connected directly to a ribbon cable without the caddy, then it must have been modded at some time, but the little adapter card should still be needed to go from the 2.5in hd pins to the ribbon socket, since they would normally be different.

If this is still not the case, then maybe your machine was further modded with a ribbon cable that has the 44-pin socket for the 2.5in drive on one end and the correct motherboard pin size at the other end....... Either that, or I am just screwy!

One other thing to note - if/when you can get the sd adapter connected properly, it still doesn't work, then it could be that you will need to change your strategy and get a CF card and adapter instead. They have been a much more reliable mod over the years, as the sd adapters appear to have been changed somewhere along the line that more often than not makes them not work in the VS recorders.

WHEW!!!! That's a load to take in with your first post, eh?

Welcome to the planet!!

Hope you can find a solution that works great for you without too much more hassle to get there.
