Yep, I have started a blues band. As what happens to me a lot, external things effect the internal... that is to say, it wasn't MY idea. I have been toying with an idea to start a dance band playing any genre (okay, maybe not polka) of music that people can dance to. I have a woman I do duets with now, so that would include songs by female singers, so the song possibilities were seemingly endless. I'd put the possibility of an all-originals band on the back-burner a while ago. I just don't have enough material for four sets, for one thing. Anyway, I've been more than satisfied doing open mics and being casually in the house band for two different clubs. I like casuality... ha. That's why busking was a perfect fit for me, but there is no good place to busk around here.
Anyway, The Joshua Tree Saloon started a Blues Night every Thursday for the past several months and it's been very successful. A friend of mine, Peter "Lucky" Johansen and band (he is a GENUINE bluesman) had been working it. Well, Lucky decided they weren't getting paid enough, and they weren't, so he quit. The Saloon decided to do it a little differently; they'll have a different group monthly for Blues Night. Well, Leslie, the person who books the club and runs sound and a good friend, asked me on Wednesday night if I could do May starting the next night. With no time to throw a band together, she volunteered to play bass and we just did it as a duet. It went over great! Now I'm recruiting a four piece band and have quite a few folks who want in. Musicians are everywhere you turn up here. Today I decide who. Anyway, That's how it happened.
So, looking ahead, this will kick-start my dance band idea.
Oh, and that name Danny Ray and the Blue Boys, I had to come up with on the spot so they could start advertising. Leslie asked me if would be a problem because of the magazine called Blueboy. I thought she meant that we could get sued or something so I said naw, no way that could happen. I'd never even heard of it anyway. Well I looked it up and it's a gay magazine! Again, I don't give a shit. Let people think we're gay. They don't like it, fuck 'em... metaphorically, that is, ha.

Oh, and we're getting the same pay as Lucky was getting: $150! Yeah, and Lucky had a 6-piece band! I refuse to pay anyone less than $50 a night, so I'm doing it for whatever tips we get. I will push the tip-jar hard, baby. Ha!

Update: Well, shit. Two days before the gig and still no bass-player. Grrr...
My lead player is a good bass player, too, (Bryan Zee,) so for this week it looks like he'll be on bass with me on guitar. I've been practicing, isn't it amazing how much better we get when we practice? Ha! Anyway and I don't suck as hard as I thought on lead guitar, so fuck it, we're a 3-piece. I'm trying to look at it as a pay raise, heh...
There is a surplus of musicians around here, but everyone I know is booked... or I have BO or something... I'm only half-kidding, just like everywhere else, the drama and cliques play out here, too. Most of them are burned-out musicians tired of beating their heads against the wall in Hollywood.
I'm probably over-thinking this anyway. I mean if Leslie and I did good with NO rehearsal, she knowing only about a quarter of the songs I played, then fuck it, we'll be fine.

Fuck it, you'll be fine.
People want your heart poured out, not your bass player to be well rehearsed.

You play some bass too, don't you? Why not take turns with Bryan? Give you both a chance to stretch a little bit. Lots of space for that in a trio.

I'd do what it takes to pull off the first couple and let things get settled as far as songs and arrangements. You may run a recording at some point as a learning tool for potential new members. "here you go, learn this stuff"

Yeah, a lot of those aren't really blues, but close enough.

Whelp, the 9th went well. It was a big crowd, but there are always a lot of tourists there. So with them and the people I invited who showed, about 25, which includes some regulars that would have been there anyway, the place was packed.
Don't remember if I mentioned, but the pay is low so it all went to the Blue Boys (this week's band name) $50 each, and I got the tips. Let's just say I don't mind working for peanuts; I got enough to buy about 50 lbs of peanuts at the going price: $.25/lb. Ha! My own fault, I forgot to push the tip jar, but shit, I'm fortunate if I can remember what fucking key I'm in, let alone such a trivial thing as money. Ha!
There is no good place to put the tip jar in that place, so I bought an illuminated one. Maybe that'll help.

The 16th went well, too. Had to scramble to get a replacement drummer, Matt had some "business emergency" and had to fly to Stockton, CA, of all places. I didn't ask... ha! So I got one of the more popular drummers around here who plays with everyone, it seems. He's good, but a different style from Matt, and even HE said to stick with Matt! Matt is very good.
So, the crowd wasn't as big as the week before for several reasons, I guess; it was the first Day of the Joshua Tree Music Festival, most of my friends went to that, and the damn wind, like 20mph with stronger gusts, they froze at the festival, I heard. But the crowd we had sustained to the end, it seemed.
The lighted tip jar didn't show up yet, and again, I forgot to push it. The price of peanuts was unchanged, let's say. I did find out that the Saloon doesn't allow walking the tip jar around, something I usually do for my friend's bands. That always helps a lot.
The good thing, pay-wise, is that I had a good talk with the owner. She has a very bad rep with performers not to mention the staff, but I've always had a knack of getting along with people no one else seems to; all a part of keeping my eye on the prize, gnome sayin'? And I laid some ground-work for a pay increase next time. We'll see. She wanted me to continue with Blues Night in June, but nope, I'm going on a road trip for a week or two.

After the last Blues Night on the 30th and when I come back from the road trip, I'm wondering what I want to do musically... performance-wise... I have an idea for a dance band with a simple song list criteria of "did people dance to it? Yea, it stay, no, it go."
I have a female singer I do duets with, Nina Henderson, that is always a hit with the crowd... but then there's the drama she brings, which while manageable...? Hey, I bring drama, too, but it's MY drama. Ha! Thing is, she needs her OWN band to do her originals, and that's what she really wants anyway. She needs a music director with more modern hiphop-ish sensibilities than I do, not to mention with a keyboard/synth/sampler that can cop those patches/sounds like on her CD.
I pretty much am not interested in a band of all originals. I just don't have enough good material.
What ever happens, even if I just go back to playing in pick-up bands as a side-man and doing back up work for open mic's, I'm happy.

Now that I'm back and thinking about this, I think I'm going to just lay back for a while and do pick-up music work as a side-man. Less stress than putting a band together. A dance band is still in the back of my mind, but it's not working it's way up toward my frontal cortex as of yet.
