Bummer. I bet newer headphones might compete, ten years is a long tech-time

It happened to me about three years ago with my Sennheiser hd580s I think they were called. I didn’t want to spend the cash at the moment to replace them so I made do with shitty headphones that I had laying around. A couple of weeks ago, I put the old pair, whose bad behavior was intermittent, and listened to some music and said “what a fool I’ve been, settling for less than this.“

I dunno. Those Sennheisers would be hard to beat. They still sound excellent. Really comfortable, even when wearing them for hours. Hopefully I'll get another 10 years out of them with the new headband.

I bet that's why you liked the Kronos pianos in headphones and not in the amp....you were having to do heavy EQ to make it sound like those Senheisser's built in mid (1-3khz) hole.
They ARE comfy, though.

I don't see (or hear) a big mid hole. I'm surprised to see big drop-off above 7K, though.

You DON'T see the 2khz hole in that chart? If everyting below 600hz is up (ending at +18db at 50hz)...and there's a +4db bump at 6khz....then what looks like a comparable(to the lows) rise to the highs somewhere north of 10khz....
...that's effectively a parametric dip at 2khz and a second dip at 8-9khz.
I mean--you love the way they sound...that's what they're designed for--to subjectively sound better. It's just something to be aware of before making any recording decisions based on them.

Granted I don't really know what to make of the multiple lines on the graph with the +- 12, 24, 36 dB stuff. So I'm looking mainly at the black 0dB line, which seems to be relatively flat from about 50Hz up until that bump at around 6K. I'm surprised by that and the trough from about 7K-10K.
Everything I've read about these phones is that they were designed to be flat, as an alternative to reference monitors for critical listening, as opposed to "hyped" to, as you say, subjectively sound "better."
But I don't purport to be an audio professional, so I could be fooled. I just know that I love these phones. I think I paid about $400 for them back then, and still believe it was money very well spent.

By the way, Pop, the Kronos is staying home now. It is too finicky and unreliable (not to mention heavy) for gigging. I'm back to the laptop running Ivory, Onmisphere/Keyscape and Kontakt in Mainstage/Logic along with my little rack with my venerable old Motif Rack ES and Focusrite 18i20. More wires to plug in, but that rig has never failed me in over 5 years of gigging, where the Kronos has embarrassed me 3 times in just over a year. The Kronos sounds great, but I don't like being on pins and needles worrying about whether it is going to crash.

I just know that I love these phones. And that's all that matters. If you like them and you trust them, fix them and be happy.

I read that over at the Kronos forum...I don't blame you one bit. Mine has been a rock, knock on wood...but, who knows how hauling it gig to gig might make it less so...
Yeah...I get the black line isn't nearly as far off. I also don't know what +24db vs 0 means in headphone testing. It really IS most important that you love them. I have some I "love" for phone music listening...I have never intentionally looked at the curve...

It took just 3 days for this part to arrive from the UK. Meanwhile I've been waiting 3 weeks for a T-shirt to be delivered from a print shop just few hundred miles away.
