Brought out the old DR-5 to use on the recording I made for my daughter's wedding a couple weeks ago. I still love the design of this thing, a drum machine laid out like a guitar neck, many different kits and sounds. I think I could still use it. The problem is, the volume doesn't work - it's stuck on the quietest setting, and sliding the volume knob has no effect. I'd hate to just toss it - could there be a cost-effective way to get it fixed?

Looks like they sell used for about $100.

I have a DR-5. I like the layout and I wish they had kept updating it. Some good percussion sounds. Hooked up to a computer frees you of the memory issues. However, it's 16 bit and the voices aren't MIDI standard. For example, a normal MIDI bass will play back an octave lower through the DR-5.

There is a dedicated community of users out there and I think you can get a schematic online.

Have you opened it up and tried cleaning the volume control and making sure it is connected?

It could just be dusty or one of the wires have come off.

If not, I would try to buy one from Roland and put it in myself. That is, depending on how it is mounted (never saw inside of one of those), ie: traditionally or on a circuit board, etc.

Also, have you tried adjusting the volume via midi?

Maybe you should visit a Roland/Boss forum.

Good luck!

*Edit: I see that everything is soldered to a circuit board. You can do it if you're handy with a soldering iron and can get the part. Again, if it is that part.

Are you using the original power adapter? I had a machine once and the wrong adapter made everything display like it was fine, but nothing worked correctly.

Thanks guys. I am not handy in the least! But some good suggestions there. Sounds like there's hope for it.

If you aren't up for doing it yourself, it will probably cost you more than $100 to have a tech do it, even though it's a simple job. You could just short out the pot and have it always play at full volume.

Not a stupid question at all. We always forget the obvious. I once got a PA head back from the shop and on the receipt it said "changed fuse...$50." I was so embarrassed I didn't say a word!
